This is one of several episodes in which Denny Crane gives the audience a glimpse into what a tremendous lawyer he must once have been. He advises Alan Shore to deal with the private school on their terms, by fighting power with power; "Act like you've won," he says. Alan of course brings in a TV reporter forcing the hand of the school administrator, and thereby helps the little girl like we all knew he would.
It was Denny Crane, though, who told Alan how to win, as he did earlier in the series when he told Alan to "Pull a rabbit out of a hat." Sometimes winning isn't about having the better argument or even about being right. Sometimes it's about manipulating people's emotions or public shaming. On Boston Legal, Denny Crane makes Alan Shore a better lawyer.
