Warning: Spoilers
I gave this lame-lizard outing a 7 because of the critter - I just love orangutans & fear greatly for their continued existence in the (decreasing) wild. But once again these worn-thin CHiPs trot out their tired standards - nowhere else has the occurrence of traffic accidents resulted in (old rustbucket) cars going gracelessly airborne - & whoever that Santa Monica Boulevard reject standing in for Baker is, every undynamic move/phoned-in line he makes keeps diminishing this show by the second. And just how, in the 2nd-most groan worthy scene after the cute critter "escaping" on the motorcycle (not that silly bar scrap or steer rustling), after him & Ponch got banged around good in l'affaire du watering hole, the next day they were still gleaming (Ponch) & delicately coiffed ("the OTHER one!") without the slightest sign of injury, left me unable to suspend reality anymore. But aside from that Fur-Bearin Critter, the best thing to me about this not exactly pulse pounding production - except for la clienta on SMB that sorry substitute left behind - was just now, finding out from the closing credits that, having to flipflop between this & The People's Court, I was happily spared the sight of C. Gilyard somewhere in the mix. Michael Dorn he definitely wasn't!

Not as good-bad as the rest of season 6

Ripping off Every which way but loose AND urban cowboy at the same time should count for something. But in a series that ran out of ideas years earlier, you do what you gotta do. Some producer's girlfriend as the instantly-forgotten "new" country star is predictably pathetic as is the inevitable barroom brawl anyone could see coming as soon as they walked in the place. As always the show exploits a trend, has its characters intimately involved in something hitherto never mentioned in the series and immediately discarded, and the always non-existent police work. And, as always, the crime is solved by coincidence or happenstance. No swamp things or Ralph Malph as a I-can't-believe-they-didn't-sue Kiss ripoff but you can't have it all. Mickey Gilley has a fun cash-the-check, tongue-in-cheek appearance. Plus not enough Tina Gayle.

Awful

This is one of the worst and cheesiest episodes of CHiPs. When an aspiring country singer's brother, who has an orangutan, was arrested for rustling cattle (allegedly), Ponch took it upon himself to take care of the orangutan, inexplicably at the station. The novelty was long gone by this point. The writers desperately grasped for ratings with rehashed silliness like this. When they go to see the country singer, Mickey Gilley and some other country singer also performed. Again, this just shows how desperate the writers were to keep the show afloat. This episode is really just embarrassing overall.
