Everett Sloane hires Checkmate for his client singer Jimmie Rodgers who was cresting in real life at the height of his career when he did this Checkmate story. Sloane is his manager and he's concerned about some truly bizarre threats coming at Rodgers from all directions. Kind of stupidly Sloane does not save some clues that if he had saved would have led to the source.
Among others in the cast are an obnoxious publicity agent played by Harry Lauter and an even more obnoxious comedian in George O'Hanlon who Rodgers keeps on as an opening act and retainer because O'Hanlon gave him his big break.
Fatal for a mystery, but this one was easy to figure out. Still the characterizations are enjoyable.
