Warning: Spoilers
The circus is in winter quarters. A local vet arrives and helps with a lion, but the lion's problems are greater than the circus vet—Pop Warren—can handle; but Dr. Ben Osgood helps out. But bigger problems, a disease is affecting the local cattle, and when an elephant falls ill, the town's health officer arrives and decides the circus animals are so different that they are the carriers, and he wants the circus animals destroyed. Big Tim panics and hires Dr. Ben and dumps Pop. But when Bimbo falls ill and has to be destroyed, Pop begs for more time. Dr. Ben scoffs at Pop and his ideas about loving animals and using that as a pretense to help. But the town health officer gives Corky thirty minutes to either save Bimbo or say goodbye to Bimbo.

Worse, Joey has to put Bimbo down. But Pop figures it out. A refining mill was built along the river and off flow has poisoned the river. The mill has been dumping arsenic used in refining silver into the water. And people wonder why we need rules to control pollution.

Of course, in this episode the mill owner is quick to accept responsibility, and multiple lessons are learned by all.

Stanley Andrews plays Pop and he will look familiar to those of us of a certain (old) age. In films of the 30's he had quite a career but in the 40's and 50's he was in Westerns galore. In the mid 50's he appeared on almost every kid's show including The Range Rider, The Gene Autry Show, The Lone Ranger, Sky King, Buffalo Bill Jr., Annie Oakley, and The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin. And for over 10 years he was the Old Ranger on Death Valley Days providing the opening and closing narration for 294 episodes.

His competition in this episode had a good career but didn't have the same extensive career and yet Dr. Ben is much better known for his role in another series. Russell Johnson was The Professor on Gilligan's Island. Now we just have to get MeTV to provide us a Professor collectible figurine. Gilligan and the Skipper are available, why not the entire cast?
