THE DETECTIVES – Blue Fire - 1960
This one is episode 14 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.
Detective squad member, Russell Thorson has just got some bad news. He has failed his department physical, and is going to be forced to retire. The Department doctors say that Thorson is showing signs of stress. It does not matter that Thorson is in the middle of an important case.
Thorson's fellow Detectives, Tige Andrews and Lee Farr pull a few strings and manage to buy Thorson a couple more days on the job. Thorson wants to nail the crook, Michael Pate, who is the focus of his case. Pate is a con man who is not above doing a little bloodletting as well.
Thorson pull out all the stops as he rough ups more than a few underworld types and informants. When he finally gets a lead, the man is found dead with a large blade stuck in his side. Thorson decides to go after Pate directly and poses as a rube ready for a con. One of Pate's gags is the fake diamond swap. He finds a mark, then, shows the mark a real diamond that Pate must sell at a loss. The mark goes for the deal but is only given a cut glass replica.
Thorson hits the bar where Pate hangs out. He acts like he has a load on and Pate soon hones in with the sales pitch. When Pate makes his play, Thorson goes to put the grab on him. Pate is not amused and pulls a blade. The two men engage is a first rate dust up, with plenty of fists and boots a flying. Thorson finally gets the upper hand and a battered Pate is cuffed.
Thorson takes his physical again and this time passes with flying colours.
This one is another winner from this excellent Police detective series. Hard to believe it only ran the three seasons. B/W
