Apparently there was some screw up during a rehearsal and Alan took his anger out on Mel in front of everyone. It was apparently so bad, even Buddy felt sorry for Mel. However, as usual, Mel just takes the abuse. It's embarrassing to watch...or so we are told because they only talk about this and you don't see the big blow up.
Later, the writers feel so bad for Mel that they take him to lunch. During this lunch, Rob pushes Mel to stand up for himself and eventually Mel agrees. He confronts Alan...and is promptly fired! What's next? See the show for yourself.
This is a very good episode and the ending is great. Not the funniest of shows but one that is great for character development. Well worth seeing.
