Did Rob get a Wood...or something else?

Begins at auction.

Accidentally buy ugly clown painting.

"The Masterpiece" is a show that is worth seeing because it's interesting as opposed to being all that funny. This is NOT a complaint...and the show is very good.

It begins at an auction. Rob, Buddy and Sally are doing some research for their show and Laura has come along with them. Rob accidentally ends up buying a painting he has no interest in...and ugly clown painting. However, later, at home, part of the painting chips off...and there's a different painting underneath...and it might just be a Grant Wood. So, they contact an art expert (Howard Morris) and he tells them it's a Good painting. So what does that mean?!

The ultimate identity of the painter of one of the paintings is cute. It's also unusual and something you probably will enjoy...even if it isn't laugh-filled like some episodes.

Artanis--great American Painter

Warning: Spoilers
Howard Morris's "Mr. Holdecker" was one of the funniest guest appearances on the DVD Show. His combination of arrogance and eccentricity was a perfect comic mixture. It's about as far away as you can get from his Ernest T. Bass (nothing wrong with Ernest T.--it just shows the comic range of Howard Morris). Mr. Holdecker's love of wine and philosophizing in German were great touches. The writers Persky and Denoff came up with a great Auction scene, along with an original ending regarding the mystery of the painting's creator-from possibly Grant Wood to...Artanis. So this DVD episode itself was a masterpiece in sitcom land.

The Masterpiece

I think the scene in the auction room is comedy gold, very funny stuff.

After that there's a certain amount of the audience being able to predict what's going to happen, but that doesn't stop this episode from being an awful lot of fun.
