This first episode of the show introduced the viewers to the principal characters in the works canteen, for thats the world we're immersed in.

It's Dinner Ladies because they are the staff doing all the work, and typically in such an environment there is a bloke in charge.

My first jobs were in factories with their own canteen, which was an integral part of the workplace. The canteen staff were essential employees to any decent company, with the food prepared on the premises.

You never get to know exactly how big the company is or how many people work there. But with the size of this canteen I wouldn't say it could possibly be that big, as most of the food prepared is more of the snack variety.

Another irregular character Philippa, played to absolute perfection by the wonderful Celia Imrie. She is a consummate actress that seems capable, of playing any kind of character she chooses.

Philippa Moorcroft works in what used to be known in British workplaces as the Personnel Department, and is now called Human Resources. The function of these Departments has not changed but their motivation, has been totally transformed beyond recognition.

I started my working life in the era of the former where new employees, were interviewed by members of the Personnel Department known as Personnel Officers. If you remained a good employee you never saw anyone from that Department, again until you retired.

With the change of name came a different ethos towards employees instead of just being cogs in a machine, they apparently became human beings.

My last job involved Human Resources employees, who are just like the character of Philippa Moorcroft. Who never actually took any more notice or interest of workers, but were full of daft and meaningless notions and concepts. These however were not actually dreamt up the Philpa's more by their Department, Philipa being just the mouthpiece.

The absolutely sublime Julie Walters is Brens mum Petula, who seems to morphe into her persona. Here it is a cameo appearance, but however brief her screentime, Petula becomes the attention. So consummate is Walters acting that we know so much about Petula, from her very first appearance.

We're introduced to the staff in the canteen, it's the start of a new week, and the usual mix of problems arise, bras, toasters and weddings.

What a wonderful start to this magical comedy, a wonderful first episode, it's funny, the one liners are glorious, but it's the characters that make it, they are so rich and down to Earth.

Every single performance is incredible, Julie Walters is on point as the grotesque Petula.

We need new comedy like this! 8/10
