Burt Mustin Has a Field Day
Tom_Barrister19 April 2015
Mustin began his acting career in 1951, at age 67. He did much work at CBS in the 1950s and early 1960s, working for such as Desilu, Danny Thomas, and Filmways. As these shows folded, Mustin made his way to other networks and production companies. One that was interested was Jack Webb's Mark VII Productions, who had used Mustin as early as 1954. Webb liked Mustin's spryness and fast, wisecracking style and called upon him at least nine times, mostly for bit roles involving eccentric old men.

Webb certainly had Mustin in mind when this episode was created. It's probably the most substantial role Mustin had in his long career. Mustin (who was 84 at the time) plays the 91 year old manager of an apartment building in which a murder was committed. Throughout the episode, Webb and Mustin exchange snappy one-liners with each other, with the manager telling Sgt. Friday and Officer Gannon how to do their jobs, the bad part being that what he's telling them is usually right. The two dismiss him as another police-fan, but they're in for a surprise later.

This is a great episode thanks to the great Burt Mustin...

Warning: Spoilers
I love Burt Mustin in TV shows and his three "Dragnet" performances were among his best. He was an omni-present character actor on TV from the 1950s-70s and he is best described as looking like a turtle! A charming addition to any show, including "Leave it to Beaver", "All in the Family" or "Phyllis".

In this installment, there has been a murder and Friday and Gannon are investigating. However, what makes this unusual is that one of the residents of the apartment complex is an old man (Mustin) who simply knows too much--he MUST be involved with the crime. However, when Friday checks into the old man's background, he and Gannon are in for a surprise.

Excellent writing and acting...this one is a doozy. See this one. Plus, it's nice that even in the mostly mediocre season 3 there were still some good ones!

Mustin wasn't really 91... just born looking that old.

Jack Webb must've liked Burt Mustin--- he employed him (undoubtedly at union scale) no less than 10 times across all of his shows. It's a little surprising that he never became a member of his stock company (think Virginia Gregg, Casey Harris, et al). The old guy was a spry 84 here and cast as a retired apartment manager who recently hit 91. This episode is, by color Dragnet standards, pretty explicit; the female victim is shown hog tied and very dead. Mustin plays it cagey delivering Webb's famous machine gun-clipped dialog that never steps over another actor's lines. There's an emphasis on depicting "modern" (circa 1969) police investigative techniques and Mustin plays the red herring bit to the hilt with a mildly surprising twist ending. Webb's economizing is always apparent in these later episodes; there's, I think, only 3 interior sets used here, along with the second unit-shot stock exteriors starring that '67 Fairlane. Here, I wanted to see the victim's now valuable Pontiac GTO... alas, unseen but much discussed.

Who is investigating who here?

Warning: Spoilers
Burt Mustin does a great job in his role, first as the primary suspect, and then nailing it in his actual role at the conclusion. Maybe because it's because of his age at filming, because he plays the part exceptionally well - including saying he plays only 17 holes of golf because 18 is too tiring. And who could forget him saying "at my age (94 for this episode), what's the use of making new friends"? It was a heck of a surprise at the conclusion finding out he was a retired homicide detective with 44 years on the Chicago PD. Captain Hugh Brown says it all when he recognizes Detective Calvin Lampy at the end, referring to him as "you old war horse". And when Brown asks Friday and Gannon if Lampy was their suspect, their response was "we were beginning to think we were his suspect" due to his constant hints and observations about potential clues without letting on about his law enforcement history. All in all, probably my favorite Dragnet episode, and only with a spry Burt Mustin would that be possible. I'm giving it a 10/10.

Dragnet - Homicide 1969
Scarecrow-8828 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Burt Mustin is a real treat as a hotel manager, Calvin Lampe, who offers (more like "imposes") detective tips and reasoning to Sgt Joe Friday and his partner, Bill Gannon, as they investigate the murder of a tenant, hog-tied, gagged, with ceramic pieces all over her face to indicate the fatal blow to the head was from a vase of some sort. This whole episode, titled "Homicide", is particularly amusing as you see the frustrations and annoyances on the face of Friday and Gannon as Lampe points at pieces of evidence, imparting his wisdom, seemingly from detective books (!!!), revealing an incredibly sharp mind for a 91-retiree. A hand print of Lampe's and a missing page to a letter meant for the victim's parents seem to indicate the manager might be the most likely suspect, but soon details emerge regarding other prints found at the scene of the crime, perfume opened, a jewelry box that was black being stolen, a glass of water found, and eyewitness possibilities that might prove to have three others more suitable for the crime. Mustin's cocksure dissection of the crime scene and his own account of the victim are something that must be seen to be truly appreciated. Friday and Gannon obviously bothered by Lampe's questions about their investigation and full survey of everything, giving his advice and advising without request is hilarious. This episode is a lot of fun if you enjoy the way this show works. I know Mustin from The Twilight Zone. The reaction of the forensics specialist, particularly when fingerprinting, to Lampe who continues to advise him on the process is probably my favorite scene. But Webb always cracks me up with somebody he encounters during a case irritates his Joe Friday.

Excellent

Homicide: DR-22 is arguably Dragnet's best episode. It is due of course to Burt Mustin. That Old War Horse just chews the scenery and it is hard not to smile while watching him perform.

Probably the best episode of Dragnet I've seen
AlsExGal18 May 2022
By season three Dragnet was taking a "socially relevant" turn, and there were bunches of episodes dealing with the problems of that time period. Thus the episodes are very time stamped. This one takes a jump into black comedy which is fairly timeless.

Detectives Friday and Gannon are called to the scene of a murder. There is the body of a young woman in her apartment, tied and bludgeoned to death on the back of the head, her home ransacked. Initially there are no suspects. But that apartment manager - He appears to have all of the facts of the case. He appears to want to show off his knowledge of the case, police procedure, and of the victim. He is just too helpful. Could this be the murderer, getting a kick out of the fact that the cops are stumped and there he is - the actual killer - right under their noses? Maybe. Except for just one thing. The apartment manager is 91 years old.

What makes this episode is the delightful Burt Mustin as said apartment manager who is actually 85 at this point. If you have watched much 50s, 60s, and even some 70s TV you've probably seen him and you would definitely remember him, because he is no placeholder supporting actor. He steals every scene.

So could a 91 year old man manage to use brute force to kill a healthy young 25 year old woman? If so, I'll have what he's having.

Burt Mustin and Jill Banner!

Quick moving, enjoyable episode with Burt giving Friday and Gannon a run for their money as far as crime-solving. Miss Banner does a fine job as always as a girl caught up in the plot.
