It would be *decades* before mainstream media equaled this for LGBT content

The most striking thing about this episode is it is no more dated or cringy than any random episode of 80's tv. The Jean and her lesbianism is handled with such grace and care that nothing feels stereotypical or condescending. Likewise the episode is neither preachy nor ham-fisted in anyway. It is just a fun and funny story about innocent crush and friendship between senior women. Such a great episode.

Isn't It Romantic? (#2.5)

Warning: Spoilers
Dorothy's old friend Jean comes for a visit. She is actually a lesbian and Dorothy doesn't tell it to the other girls. But Jean starts having feelings for Rose.

Another great episode, it seems that season 2 is better than the first one.

I really liked and to be honest was surprised how they handles homosexuality on this show. I don't expect much of it because it was filmed so long ago, but they did it amazingly.

Rose was so cute with her farm excitement, I could understand why Jean started having feelings for her. and the night when she tells her was very funny. It is great to see how decent of a person Rose is, because her conversation with Jean was great for someone who doesn't understand this kind of stuff.

And Sophia's lines on Jean being gay, were both funny and sweet. Some made me almost cry.

Danny Thomas is hysterical in this episode, and he's not even in it!

Warning: Spoilers
Veteran actress Lois Nettleton is excellent in this touching episode where she plays Jean, a kind hearted old friend of Dorothy's who just lost her partner, Pat, and is still in mourning. The twist here is that Pat was a woman. Taking away stereotypes, this shows a lesbian as a lovely, feminine woman whom anyone would be proud to call a friend. The vulnerable Jean falls for Rose's innocence and sweetness, and Rose must express her flattery without leading Jean on. Scenes from the episode have been utilized in drag shows and quotes from the Danny Thomas scene are constantly quoted. Dorothy's story involving old classmate Mark Firber may not have anything to do with the plot (definitely filler) but is quite funny.

A friend of Dorothy's.

Dorothy's friend Jean comes to stay after her partner Pat has passed away, Dorothy is afraid to tell Blanche and Rose that Jean is a lesbian, Jean and Rose get close.

Talk about ahead of its time.

You have to hand it to the producers, and all those involved in the show, this episode was perhaps thirty years ahead of its time, displaying attitudes and acceptance that simply wasn't in the mainstream.

That scene where Sophia and Blanche are giggling away in bed is absolutely enchanting, it's funny, it's moving, it's incredibly well acted. Sophia was just magical, as a character in her 80's you'd have thought she'd have a particular attitude, it was quite surprising.

It's actually a comical love story with a twist, what a beautiful thirty minutes this was.

10/10.

Ahead of its time

Warning: Spoilers
One of the best episodes of the "The Golden Girls" - now that I have the time to watch the show and now that I am older. Also, one of my favorites. There are lines in this episode that are laugh out loud funny if you're watching as a middle-aged person. Tackling this subject in 1986 in a hit show is truly ahead of its time. And handling it with such care & respect - hats off to the WRITERS & producers. And to the 4 ladies - this is ensemble acting at its best. I laughed out loud at Blanche's indignation when she found out Jean preferred Rose over her. LOL. Also, Rose's "I could have looked it up!"😁 No wonder, Betty won the Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy show the 1st year this was on. She's got good timing. Truly one of the greats.
