A step back
MaxBorg8918 December 2008
Alongside the pilot, Save me is the least interesting episode of Grey's Anatomy's first year, primarily because of lazy writing that panders to clichés without the gusto required to make fun of them, which was the main joy of previous shows.

As usual, the main storyline concerns the least appealing character, namely Meredith, who is unhappy about not knowing much regarding Derek, despite the fact they have sex every night. Subplots worth noticing: Cristina has to come to terms with her unwanted pregnancy, Izzie considers getting back in touch with her estranged mother, and everyone at the hospital is startled by a patient with seizures who claims to be psychic.

That last element (the "psychic" guy) is the classic "potentially inexplicable case" gimmick that could ruin a show. In this case, it actually works in the episode's favor, since the silly plot line is handled with the right kind of humor/seriousness balance that is sorely missing elsewhere. Even Sandra Oh, normally the most reliable cast member, does petty much nothing important this time around, leaving it to Patrick Dempsey to save the day (and the last few minutes of the episode) with his natural charm and endearing wit. But hey, with only one more episode until the end of the season, such a misstep isn't that smart a move.

Genuine

Warning: Spoilers
I like that we follow Alex closely on a case, and that he seems genuine and caring. Very invested.

This episode is somewhat dark and depressed. More serious. Not as upbeat as the previous, but I think that's great. We feel the characters depth, and the whole tune of this episode is darker, deeper.

I love the plot with the pregnancy-issues. You can tell that Cristina cares, and it's enjoying. I love it when she cares. Sandra Oh is such a great actress!

George and Olivia are so cute together at this stage.

The end of this episode is gold! The music and the stories wrapping up - love it!

Religious Surgery

Warning: Spoilers
This Episode begins with George, he is eating chocolate muffins in the kitchen. Cristina is pregnant, Preston is the father. Cristina wants a abortion. Derek goes into surgery, Meredith is assisting him with it. Derek removed the bloodcloth during the surgery. Devo is in surgery, she is really religious. Izzie baked muffins after Duff his tip. Izzie is calling her mother, for a really long time they didn't have contact. Derek tells a lot more about his personal life to Meredith. Derek lives in a trailer, he has no idea what he is going to do with all the land he owns. Nice Episode of Grey's Anatomy Season 1, not an exciting Episode but still on a good level!

Anesthesiologist demoted

Warning: Spoilers
I bought the DVD when it came out Feb 14 and was really surprised to see Joe the bartender sitting in the anesthesiologist's chair answering to the name "Jeremy". Was he demoted from being a medical doctor to a life of prescribing alcohol to cure life's ills? Just a funny little quirk that cracked me up! I also didn't realize until I saw the opening credits on DVD that Addison is the one using the eyelash curler (so that means she was on the show before she dropped the bombshell at the end of season one). I can't wait until season 2 comes out on DVD. George is absolutely adorable; Patrick Dempsey IS McDreamy. I love the fact that the writers keep adding new dimensions to each character! This show is the most creative, entertaining, energetic and intelligent show on TV.
