Harts under the glass
coltras3521 September 2023
Millionaire Dodsworth Nash has become infatuated with Mrs Hart. The only problem is Mr Hart stands in the way of Nash's plans to woo Mrs Hart. And Nash has made plans to remove the problem.

An odd episode that stars John Dehner as a reclusive rich man who keeps wild animals under the glass, is obsessed with cleanliness and wants Jennifer to be an object for him to admire- behind a glass. Definitely a nut job of the highest order. It's quite enjoyable, however, with a strong message about keeping things in captivity, and as mere objects. John Dehner acts great as usual and Stephanie really shows her disapproval of Dehner keeping tiger in captivity. "Diamonds are definitely a girl's best friend," quips Jennifer after using her ring as a way to break out of their captivity.

This Germaphobe Way Pre-Dates Howie and His Fist Bump

Very interesting episode. First thing I noticed was yet another episode -- the third -- that made very blatant reference to the the need for animals to be free, protected, and conserved. It was fascinating. Definitely William Holden must have passed away shortly before these eps. Next, I was blown away by the amount of backstory they gave away on Jennifer. A whole lot of expository stuff in the first scenes about just who Jennifer is. Born on a small horse farm in Maryland in 1949 to Suzanne & Steven, undergrad at Vassar and Smith where she majored in languages. Expert skier, sailor, and several cracks at the major peaks in Europe & the Himalayas. Just WOW. The stunts in this one were really well-done when Jennifer is kidnapped to become part of an eccentric germaphobe's "collection" of rare and exquisite things. It's the first time I've seen RJ look genuinely shaken up after one of Jonathan's "tussle's." The direction here was excellent. And the acting from absolutely everyone, every guest star, everyone was wonderful. Jennifer cries some real tears in this one, and Jonathan is genuinely spooked; I especially liked his scene in the park with the girl. And Max gets a nice set of scenes, too. The sound editing in this one more than makes up or the atrociousness of the magic episode. I love these guys, but let's be honest, there were eps they seemed to be phoning it in; this was not one of them. Even with the badly redressed hallway, I just loved this so much. I give it a 10!

Good Except For

I'll get the bad out of the way first. The acting by John Dehner is not very good. He doesn't come across as a real person at all. He's supposed to be an overly eccentric billionaire, but he plays it in such a flat and cardboard way that it never seems like you're watching a real person. Maybe it was just bad casting. So that's my main complaint.

But if you can put that aside it's actually a pretty fun episode. Every one else in this episode does a good job. The main characters, the guest characters, it's all well done.

It's kind of fun to see Mr. Hart "dueling", so to speak, with another extremely rich man. And they are battling over a woman. But not just any women.... Mr. Hart's wife. And he doesn't like that.

Too Weird

John Dehner plays a reclusive, germophobic millionaire (with obvious parallels to Howard Hughes). Becoming obsessed with Jennifer, the old man kidnaps her and keeps her in a glass cage. Well, at least it's a different twist on the stalker stories.

The annoying Lionel Stander gets a chance to try out a foreign accent (very badly; he's not that great with English). And Stefanie Powers gets a chance to pontificate on keeping animals out of captivity. She reminds me of Stephanue Vanderkellen on "Newhart" who once set Larry and Darryls' pet pig loose to go back to live in the forest or the sea or whatever it's native habitat.

Since all her needs are catered to (apart from freedom) what's spooky is that lots of Americans might like living that way. I've certainly met some who wanted to live in the village in "The Prisoner."

One of the series' dumbest episodes and it's too bad a notable actor like Dehner got stuck with it. But perhaps they thought this episode was so stupid it needed an actor with Dehner's gravitas.

Ridiculous.
