Hugo Ballard is an artist who fakes his own death.
A few years later Ballard's work has rose in value. At an auction his wife who was in on the fabricated death slashes a painting called The Girl with Grey Hair. She claims it is a fake.
Inspector Duval is called to investigate. As the spouse of the artist she owns her husband's art work. Therefore she is entitled to damage the painting. If it was a fake then she destroyed a forgery.
However Duval is puzzled and forms a hypothesis that Ballard might be alive and he jilted his wife, hence why she is so angry.
Duval decides to investigate just where some of the recent paintings originated from.
It leads him to find a young woman with grey hair.
It was a Colombo type of deduction from Duval to think Ballard might be alive. There was a handy reason why Ballard's painting suddenly came onto the market. Even why his wife was left in the dark.
