Laverne leaves Shirley Warning: Spoilers
When I started this one I had to check if I skipped over an episode on the dvd because at the very beginning Laverne rushes into the bedroom to tell Shirley she's moving out of the apartment and moving in with David. What?! Who the hell is David and why is Laverne moving in with him?! I had to check the dvd menu because this was so random and out of the blue. Shirley seems to be just as shocked as I am upon learning this. I wonder is she even met the guy?!

And I know Sonny was cut from the show, but it looked like Laverne was getting serious with him right before he mysteriously vanished. I wish he had stayed and Laverne was going to move in with him upstairs. That would have been great to see happen and this way the girls would be still together in the same building. But this David guy just drops out of the sky and he doesn't even strike me as someone Laverne would go out with.

But she tells Shirley she's in love with him.....so why didn't we ever see him before? The continuity on this show is terrible. At least introduce the character for a few episodes before having them move in with each other, but since this was only going to be a "one and done" episode, I guess there was no need. I also have to keep reminding myself that sitcoms back then didn't really have story arcs and most stories were open and closed with each episode.

I think 'Friends' was one of the first sitcoms to bring long story arcs into the sitcom mainstream. But back to the show.... Laverne does move out of the apartment and in with David. I really didn't like how Laverne left. Shirley was all sad and wanted to take time to be in the moment and Laverne was all "I'll see you at work tomorrow".... WTH?! After 10 years living together, to just casually walk out so nonchalantly was a slap in the face to poor Shirley.

But she's no better because as soon as Laverne is out the door, Shirley tosses Laverne's giant fuzzy dice over the balcony and already begins to redecorate the apartment in her mind. Where's the love?! And for Laverne to just leave and stiff Shirley with the full rent too. Bad!

Over at the new apartment Laverne and this David guy get settled in and the whole thing is really awkward. The both of them don't act like a couple that's madly in love. Thankfully it's short lived and Laverne splits when she discovers he has no intention of ever marrying her as he prefers to stay engaged forever. Run Laverne, RUN!... And that's just what she does. Good girl.

Back at the apartment Pop visits and Shirley stalls for hours because she can't tell him that his little Muffin is shacking up with some mop headed stranger.

Laverne comes home just as Pop starts getting suspicious and all is well again. It was an ok episode. I can't say I hate it, but it's jarring for the episode to open in the middle of the story like that and we're just supposed to accept that Laverne has been seeing someone long enough to decide to move in with them. A little build up would have been appreciated.

Living in sin in those days
angelahptrio6 May 2020
At the time, living together is considered a sin ( some people still think that), but the show handled it well because Laverne questions her boyfriend will they get married in the future or stay unmarried? He doesn't want to get married and she does. Good thing Laverne knows, so she moves out. See, no harm done.
