Sometimes June expects the impossible
pensman21 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes you can just ask too much from your children. Ward is temporarily under the thumb of June's aunt as June is leaving to be with her sister for a few days. Bad for Ward, but terrible for Beaver.

What did June buy, break or lose? If she's making a special dinner then something drastic is coming: it is in the form of Aunt Martha. Aunt Martha has never been married, thus never had children, and doesn't understand boys at all: she's a perfect choice to put in charge.

Wally is a lost cause, he's a teenager. But Beaver perhaps can be molded into a Bronson, June's family name. Well if a Bronson is supposed to look like Little Lord Fauntleroy, then Beaver is a success. But god help him if any of his friends see him: he looks like a chicken with all his feathers taken off, which is Wally's apt description. Aunt Martha intends for Beaver's friends to see him; the new clothes are for school. Fine if Beaver was attending an 1880's boarding school in New England. Unfortunately, Beaver is attending school in 1957 Mayfield.

Beaver, that is Theodore is doing his best to humor Aunt Martha. If only Ward would say something. Wally got Beaver to school early in the hope no one would see him. Beaver is doing his best to avoid everyone but at the end of the day he is surrounded. Larry calls Beaver a sissy and that's it. Beaver goes at everyone, including Judy Hensler. Mr. Bloomgarden breaks up the fight, but by looking at Beaver he sees the problem and just sends Beaver home.

Wally tells Ward that Beaver got into a fight at school. It wasn't his fault; It was Aunt Martha's. Ward decides he has to talk with Aunt Martha, but before he can start June calls and that pretty much puts Ward's talk on hold. June again goes on and on about how Aunt Martha is her favorite Aunt. Will Ward throw Beaver to the wolves again? It seems so. Theodore is setting off to school wearing the same outfit; and worse, she is making Theodore take an umbrella.

Ward has been waiting outside for Beaver. He has a change of clothes for Beaver. Ward doesn't want to hurt the feelings of June's favorite Aunt, but he has to protect his son. When he reaches down to take the umbrella away from Beaver, Beaver gives his dad a hug and a kiss and says his father is just like one of the guys. Ward beams.

June is back and everyone is taking Aunt Martha to the airport. Beaver is wearing the suit. He loves his mom, so he doesn't want to hurt Aunt Martha's feeling either. Beaver is a boychik, but I don't believe he will ever make it completely as a Bronson.

A father's love
bsama22 October 2013
We always thought Ward was uptight. This is my favorite episode. Ward side steps the old lady and puts beaver in normal clothes. Beaver kisses his father before he goes off to school. I can only hope jerry mathers I looks back on this episode with fondness. A son kissing a father was not the norm on television back then when in reality most sons kissed their fathers especially in the Mediterranean cultures. Though a hokey show, it would hit the mark occasionally with a good human interest story. May Ward and June rest in peace along with Fred, lumpy, And whitey.... Show was on at a time when the public was a little more innocent.

"We're Getting Along Like 4 Peas In A Pod."
StrictlyConfidential10 July 2020
(*Larry Mondello to Beaver quote*) - "You know something, Beaver? You're a sissy!"

While June is away, Aunt Martha (with birds on her hat) comes to stay at the Cleaver household to take care of things (much to Ward's silent protests).

And, at that point - It doesn't take Aunt Martha long to get the OK to take Beaver (but not Wally) shopping for new clothes which she feels are much more suitable for the young boy to be wearing.

And, with that in mind - Beaver soon finds himself having to wear his new short pants to school where the cruel teasing and vicious taunting from his fellow classmates creates all sorts of unwelcome problems for the boy like he never imagined possible.

Oh No! Aunt Martha!

If I were to rate all of the LITB episodes, my bottom list would include all the shows that Aunt Martha appeared in. This particular show is the worst of the worst. What is there to like about Aunt Martha? In my opinion, nothing. It's no surprise to me that she is a spinster. Who would ever want to marry her? She is annoying, uppity, and haughty. Why would she dress Beaver in that Monkey Suit? And why does she allow Wally to go untouched? It would have been interesting to see what outfit she would have put Wally in. Two nice things that helped save the show. First, the cool way dad came to the rescue and dressed up Beaver for school in the garage. And second, the last scene was nice when Beaver dressed up for Aunt Martha because he didn't want to hurt her feelings. The boys were raised right, in spite of June's mistakes. It's also interesting to note that you never know how far away Aunt Martha lives from Mayfield. Sometimes it's a short drive, and sometimes it's a long plane ride. "Good-Bye Aunt Martha! Don't hurry back!"
