Shaving The Peach Fuzz
ccthemovieman-131 December 2006
Wally's a hero in his first freshman football game. His three buddies are congratulating him in the locker room after the game. I should say "two buddies" are lauding him because Eddie is jealous and soon diverts the post-game attention to himself, bragging about how he's now shaving. One of the others guys is, too, and the other is close....and they go over to Eddie's house to see his shaver. Wally now feels "out of it" and walks home with the Beav.

Later, Ward needs to shave quickly for rushing off to a party but Wally is in the bathroom "shaving" and has used his dad's last razor (even though he doesn't have any facial hair to shave). Ward yells at him, big-time, in front of Beaver and Eddie Haskell. The latter, of course, then tells everyone at school what happened and Wally is the butt of jokes.

However, Ward realizes he was wrong yelling at his son in front of Eddie, so he makes it up to him in a clever and thoughtful way.

To blade or to cordless electric, there's the shave dilemma
pensman17 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Wally had a good game, he played for four minutes and ten seconds; just ask Eddie. Eddie is a little jealous of the attention Wally is getting and manages to change the topic of the conversation to himself: he is shaving. It seems they are all shaving except for Wally who is feeling less manly right now.

At home, Beaver is looking for an encyclopedia as he likes to look at the pictures. When Ward walks in, Beaver tells him that Wally scored a touchdown which pleases Ward and upsets June. Upstairs, Wally is shaving with a blade razor sans blade which might account for the smooth shave. Using a blade makes the shave less sooth and more nick prone.

Wally comes down for dinner looking like he's been in a fight. June suspects it's because of football, Ward figures Wally tried shaving. Ward suggests Wally stop because shaving makes your beard come in faster. Wally figures he needs to shave every day to get that beard to really come in. June is in the throes of her baby is growing up, too fast.

Eddie has stopped by to get an assignment from Wally because Eddie cut the class. Beaver tells Eddie that Wally has been shaving every day for a week. Wally gets Ward's shaver to prove he does shave; unfortunately Ward walks in to get his razor and balls Wally out for not listening and for using all his blades.

At school, Lumpy congratulates Wally for making the football varsity. Eddie joins the group and of course uses his information about Wally's shaving experience to make Wally look foolish. During dinner Wally makes some comments about the food and Ward sends Wally to his room. Beaver explains why Wally is in a bad mood; and it's because Ward yelled at Wally in front of Eddie Haskell. Ward feels guilty and needs to make it right.

Beaver and Wally are at the barber shop and so are Chester, Tooey, and Eddie. When Ward walks in Andy, the barber, asks if he should give Wally the once over. Ward says if Wally needs a shave then Andy is the expert. All the guys are eyes on Wally. It was a setup but Wally is grateful; he knows Ward set it up to make it OK. Wally knows that shaving does not make the man; the man knows what needs to be done and what doesn't need to be done.

Shaving was a rite of passage for some guys. I had a friend in college who as a college sophomore had never shaved. He felt he was being left out of a morning ritual and that depressed him. Everyone in our dorm floor envied him. Being hirsute was not seen as a plus. Nonetheless, he would come in the dorm bathroom on Saturdays and make a go at a wet shave. It's been about 50 years now, watching this episode made me think of Bill. I wonder if he ever got his wish.

In a hurry to grow up
AlsExGal4 May 2024
Wally goes out for the freshman football team, even though June fears he'll get "wrecked". While talking with the other guys after a game, Eddie announces he's shaving. Richard says that he is as well. This gets Wally wanting to try to do so himself, but he winds up cutting himself badly. The bandages on his face at dinner alert his parents to what is going on. Ward thinks he's talked Wally out of shaving at this point in time, but in fact he's argued for the case by telling Wally that daily shaving makes one's beard stiffer and thus means you may need to continue shaving.

When Ward needs to shave one night and can't find his razor he finds Wally in the middle of shaving himself and Ward blows his top at Wally. What Ward failed to take into account is that Eddie Haskell is standing right next to Wally as this is happening, and Eddie has never failed to turn another fellow's bad moment into an opportunity to make fun of him in front of other people, even if it is his best friend. All the guys know about what happened thanks to Eddie, and Wally is getting the business at school and in the locker room.

Ward thinks Wally's bad mood and attitude are because he made him quit shaving, but Beaver knows the truth and let's his dad know that he made a fool out of him in front of the worst possible person. Ward comes up with a clever solution to resolve the situation. What is that solution? Watch and find out.

Eddie sure took Wally's friendship for granted over the years. I know why Eddie followed Wally around, what I can't figure out is why Wally reciprocated the friendship. Ward has a good moment talking to Wally about the measure of a man being what's on the inside, not what's on his chin.

Floyd the Barber

It's fun seeing Howard McNear play a Barber two years before the Andy Griffith show debut. Perhaps this performance won him the part.

Ward loses his temper.
LukeCoolHand5 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
On second viewing of many episodes, I have found that I don't like them nearly as much. Unlike many other series that I can watch over and over and many times I enjoy them even more when I re-watch them, such as Columbo and The Andy Griffith Show. In this episode Ward loses his temper with Wally right in front of Beaver and Eddie Haskel. And of course Eddie is smirking the whole time. This was hard to watch on second viewing as we now know that type of dressing down on children is not good for their self esteem, confidence or well being. And Ward does that a lot with both boys and sometimes June. He's really overbearing at times. Every other episode has either or both scenes of Ward losing his temper or Beaver doing something bad his friends talk him into. Seeing beaver being talked into something stupid and/or Ward losing his temper almost every episode is really getting old. These broken record plots needed changing.

Slowly, But Surely Wally's Growing Up
StrictlyConfidential31 October 2020
(*Ward to Wally quote*) - "Now, I'll tell you once more. Stop trying to act so grown-up!"

Wally Cleaver is just a young baby-faced teen who so wants to emulate his school buddies who all claim that they are now shaving on a regular basis.

But when Wally borrows his father's razor (without asking to do so) he finds that shaving his peach fuzz only creates more troubles for him than what he had first anticipated.

Anyway - As this episode turns out - It's all just another lesson to be learned about growing up (into a man).
