The Likely Lads. Written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais with Clement also directing. This is such an assured first episode with no rough edges.

Bob Ferris (Rodney Bewes) and Terry Collier (James Bolam) have just returned from a holiday in Spain. Bob made an effort to learn the lingo and was smittened by the continental lasses.

Terry prefers the English lasses but is surprised that a French girl named Louise has written to him. Bob is upset as he fancied her but never summoned the courage to chat with her.

However Terry did give her his address and she is coming over and is also bringing a friend.

Only when she arrives the train station, Louise is actually is Welsh. At least her friend is French which pleases Bob.

The first episode just seems a cut above what was going on other channels at the time. Working class but a with touch of aspiration.

Bob and Terry being pleased with themselves they went abroad and not to the English seaside. They also do that common thing when people go abroad. The place they went to is so clean or the women more stylish.

I noticed Terry sister Audrey (Sheila Fearn) does not have much of a Geordie accent.

Great Start

Considering this was the first episode it really was sharp. The characters are formed from the outset and the dialogue hit the ground running. A classic episode with a very clever twist at the end. Bob and Terry had arrived.

Warning: Spoilers
Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais' 'The Likely Lads' provided BBC-2 with its first major comedy hit. Geordie factory workers 'Bob Ferris' ( the late Rodney Bewes ) and 'Terry Collier' ( James Bolam ) are life-long mates who return from a holiday in Spain. Bob made an attempt to fit in with local customs, but Terry did not and ate steak pie and chips and drank British beer. Bob was attracted to a French girl named Louise ( Christine Collins ). He never got to speak to her. Terry did, though, and - cheekily - supplied her with his own address...

The show hit the ground running with its first episode. The characters are fully established, and both Bewes and Bolam are excellent ( even if they do say "Eee!" rather lot ). There's no Thelma. She came in with the 1970's follow-up. Instead we get Bartlett Mullins as the elderly 'Cloughy'. Sheila Fern appears as 'Audrey', Terry's glamorous sister. She mentions "Doctor Who" at one point. The long-running sci-fi series was only a year old when this episode was made. A testament to its massive popularity.

Bettine Le Beau, who appears briefly, is best remembered for her appearances on 'The Benny Hill Show' in the early '70's.

Funniest moment - Louise shows up and when speaks, she turns out to be Welsh. To say Terry is shocked is an understatement.
