Not a Goat of a Chance
Hitchcoc1 May 2015
Klinger buys a goat from a peddler, hoping to make money selling fresh milk. B. J. spots a vase on the same cart and wants to buy it. Charles realizes it is a very rare piece of pottery and tries to lowball him, but he needs cash to do so. Rizzo lends him the money and the usurious motor pool sergeant owns Charles because of a strange event. Hawkeye has been designated paymaster. When the monthly payments are being made, surgery calls. Klinger takes the money, but the goat gets it and eats it. Soon the Army comes calling, and Pierce is going to owe them over 20,000 dollars. It takes some chicanery to get it to work, but, of course, where there's a will there's a way.

Goat, vase and cash

Warning: Spoilers
Hawkeye is in deep trouble because Klinger's goat ate the payroll cash when Hawkeye was payroll master. Help! Anyway, the subplot is Winchester and BJ vying for a vase.

This is the second M*A*S*H episode directed by David Odgen Stiers, and he manages to create an episode that draws you in. It's a shame he didn't direct more episodes.

Rizzo (G.W. Bailey) gets a prominent supporting role as a loan shark who preys on Winchester for sure.

Funny but has truthful parts.

When the goat eats the cash Klinger was to watch over when Hawkeye who is this months paymaster has to go to surgery starts a funny episode. Of course there will be an investigation, and in the military you are guilty until proven innocent. Charles wants to buy a vase due to his greed, but since he has not been paid, enlisted first, borrows cash from Rizzo at an outrageous rate. This happened more than this episode shows. In the late 60's the rate was 5 for 7, 10 for 15, 20 for30. Etc. At the end it works out with a surprise , except for Charles who get his just due, which is fitting.
