"Raiders" retelling with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
RamblerReb16 June 2011
This particular episode of "Magnum" is one of the most famous, almost as famous as "Did You See the Sun Rise," because it addresses one of the most notorious "missed opportunity" stories in Hollywood history. Everyone (almost) knows how Selleck missed out on doing "Raiders" because of the conflict with "Magnum," and how the writers' strike of 1980 would have let him do it, and how (dammit!) they *were even shooting scenes in Hawaii while he was there*!!! Well, this one shows what might have been.

An almost shot-for-shot (with obvious abridging and Magnumesque touches) remake of the movie, we get to see what the film might have been like with Selleck in the lead, and, for my part, I think it would have made even more money.

As for the episode itself, it is very well done, with humorous dialogue (the characters flip-flopping between self-aware expository dialogue and stilted "heroic" dialogue when they realize they're breaking character is especially amusing), good action, and effective physical comedy.

All in all, worth a re-watch if you can track it down.

Tom Selleck gets to show how he would have appeared as Indiana Jones
CCsito20 June 2020
Tom Selleck was unable to star in the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie due to his TV commitments. So the role of Indiana Jones went to Harrison Ford. It mirrored what happened in the Wizard of Oz where the role of Dorothy intended for Shirley Temple instead went to Judy Garland due to Fox studios not willing to lend Ms. Temple over to MGM. Tom Selleck gets to emulate the role of Indiana Jones by wearing clothing similar to the role and use a whip and come across snakes. The title of the episode is aptly named Raiders of the Lost Art with Higgins constantly correcting others who keep saying Ark instead. You get an idea of how Selleck would have portrayed the role of Indiana Jones. Selleck starred in several Western movies, so he fit the character for the movie IMHO. The episode is more humorous and silly than other episodes in the series and that was probably how it was intended to be made. At the end of the episode, Higgins tries to get Magnum to put the Indiana Jones style clothing and hat again, but Magnum locks him out and puts on his baseball cap making for a final rejection about assuming the Indiana Jones character.

Raiders

Warning: Spoilers
A very fun episode that sends up Raiders of the Lost Ark, or pays homage to it, and for good reason. That's because Tom Selleck was the first choice to play Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's interesting to see how Steven Spielberg would have directed Tom Selleck and what the final product would be. Also, I was thinking in terms of alternative timelines that if Tom had starred in Raiders, would his career have gone into the stratosphere and ended up cutting short Magnum, P. I. so that Tom could pursue a movie acting career.

So many paths in the Choose Your Own Adventure for sure.

Still, this episode is lots of fun.

In another life...

Warning: Spoilers
Entertaining spoof/alternative universe episode. As others have already noted, Tom Selleck missed out on playing Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark because of his prior commitment to beginning work on Magnum. Then, due to a writers' strike, the start of filming on Magnum was delayed until after RotLA had wrapped!

I'm sure Selleck has had more than enough time to get over any huge regrets he may have had, but I can't help but wonder if very occasionally the thought worms its way into his head of what might have been - the chance to become a Hollywood megastar. Especially when Harrison Ford has recently made another Indy film (which I've just right now read already came out last year. I'll have to watch it, even if it was apparently a box office flop.) But anyway, Selleck's had a career most actors would kill for and is still going strong, with the final season of Blue Bloods set to start airing in a month's time (Feb 2024.)

Penultimate thing: we find out that Magnum dumped his (maybe) fiancée via a one-sentence note. That is ice-cold! Furthermore, he hasn't even had the guts to speak to her in the seven years since and give her some sort of explanation. Not a good look, Tommy-boy. No wonder she has no intention of rekindling the relationship at the end of the episode, but instead makes a run for it!

Last thing: Connie! Miss Northrup! Miss Connie Northrup!

I'd rate it negative if it wasn't for fact Selleck could have been Raiders star
MiketheWhistle28 February 2020
Definitely a change of pace, but not in a good way. This was a total parody of Raiders (wonder if they had to pay anything to do it).

When I read that a different actor could have been cast in an iconic character I try to imagine whether or not I'd feel like it would have been better or worse. Prior tp seeing this I didn't think I'd like Selleck over Ford and this convinced me. One never really knows whether a different actor would have been better especially if they do a good job, but I feel safe to say that I don't believe Selleck would have done as good a job. His mannerisms simply don't stand up to Ford.

As to whether or not to watch this, I'd say if you miss it you'll still get plenty of sleep, but if you can watch it take it for what it is.
