Unusual...and I appreciate that.
planktonrules23 October 2013
This show begins with two guys fighting it out in an apartment. The loser of the fight is the serious loser when the other guy then tosses him through the window--landing many floors below to his death. It turns out the dead guy was a private detective and mentor to Joe Mannix and he's determined to find the guilty party. The evidence SEEMS to point to a guy with a shady past, but he might just be innocent--and the guy then hires Mannix to help him locate his alibi.

When the show begins, you might notice that this apartment has been used in several other "Mannix" episodes--including one where a girl was tossed out the OPEN window to her death (talk about a cursed apartment!). That aside, the show was novel and offered several nice twists, lots of action and a nice twist ending--and the final scene with Lt. Tobias (Robert Reed) is priceless! Well worth your time.

HOW TO MAKE SURE SOMEONE IS DEAD!
tcchelsey25 February 2023
You've come to the right place. The writers of MANNIX episodes were an inventive bunch. It makes a lot of sense here as the writer was Don Mullaly, who at the time was also working on IRONSIDE. Don wrote a total of 10 episodes. And didn't all us kids love this stuff!

Here, a close friend of Joe's goes sailing off the terrace of a high rise --however-- the twist is that the accused guy, Charlie Egan (well played by Jason Evers) hires him to prove the cops completely wrong.

Of course, Tobias (Robert Reed) is also on the case, cramping Joe's style. Egan claims a mysterious woman can prove him innocent. Carla Borelli plays Dallas King. Carla began her career as a model, which lead to many tv roles. At the time she appeared on IT TAKES A THIEF and THE NAME OF THE GAME. Watch her.

Also in the cast look for veteran Virginia Gregg (DRAGNET) as Liz. Reed was beginning his run on the BRADY BUNCH, but was always unhappy about his role, so he was given more air time on Mannix, which you will notice. You have to admit, it got confusing as Ward Wood would alternate with Reed as the senior cop. There was only one episode where they both appeared together.

I so agree with the last reviewer, it's fun to watch these episodes, mainly for the cars and styles.

That was the object back in the day too, especially to note the nice outfits Gail Fisher wore.

By the way, the familiar Los Feliz Towers is front and center here. The Towers were only a few miles from Paramount so they must have had an agreement with the owners as it would be used again, and truly is a beautiful place. Today you can buy an apartment/condo there, 1 bed, 1 bath for a cool million dollars! That's all!

Some neat spills and thrills for late night viewing. SEASON 3 EPISODE 2 remastered CBS dvd box set.

This is a good one

Warning: Spoilers
Joe seeks revenge for the death of a friend and runs into a strange case. As with many TV detectives or police officers, it doesn't pay to be their friends or partners, good chance of ending up dead. Cannon lost about a hundred of them. Joe's friend goes out a window and suspicion falls on a shady lawyer. The lawyer (Jason Evers) goes to jail and hires Mannix to find a girl who is his alibi. He locates the woman but she is out on her boat. The boat is found capsized and she is feared dead. Then she turns up with two hoods holding her and demanding ransom to turn her loose. Mannix goes to pay the ransom and the two thugs knock him out and take him and the woman. As often happens, instead of just killing them, the bad guys put them tied up in Joe's car and locks them in a garage with the motor running. Joe comes to and drives his car out of the garage. The police arrive there thirty seconds later after receiving a phone call. The woman gives a statement that clears the lawyer. Joe, the woman, and the lawyer goes back to his apartment to have a drink and the truth comes out. And Joe doesn't get paid again. Nice twist ending but you can see it coming as the everything falls into place a little too neatly. At least Joe had a wire on him at the end so he was suspicious. Robert Reed has a big part in this episode. Much more than usual for the "police lieutenant" part in a typical episode and he gets the job done. All the acting is fine. Great pacing as the story moves right along. Kudos to the director for that. Well worth viewing. Missed Peggy though. She must be out making new friends after the last episode.

Mod Pucci Shoes!
Apple-Girl25 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My favorite Mannix episode of them all. It's got everything: Plymouth convertible, Peggy finding the paisley heel of the mod shoes, Lt. Tobias looking good, and the femme fatale who is a splendid damsel in distress. Lots of double crosses. Lots of fights. Tobias showing up in the nick of time, wise-cracking with Joe.

I mainly watch Mannix for the vintage vibes. This episode has exceptional 1969 style. The swanky 60s LA high-rise apartment of the lawyer. Dallas' wardrobe and the mod decor of her apartment. Those drapes! That lamp! Even the apartment of the widow had wonderful artwork and sculpture. Formica in the kitchen.

Most unforgettable scene: Joe and Dallas, all tied up and locked in the garage with the motor running! What a panicky scene. Shot from above, looking down inside the convertible, so we can see exactly how Mannix saves himself and the girl. Oh those bad nylon-hosiery dudes, they are really bad.

A bit far-fetched but still pretty good
pkfloydmh17 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This one is about a private detective friend of Joe's who's killed and suspicion immediately falls on Charles Egan, the owner of the home where the detective was killed. However, he provides an alibi which Joe then investigates.

I found the whole scheme concocted by Egan to be a bit elaborate and hard to believe, but still overall this is a good episode. There's a really good fight scene at the end too.

Joe takes another blow to the head in this one and he and Dallas REALLY overdo it with the coughing in the scene where they get locked in the barn with the car running, so I'm taking a point off for each one as well as another point off for the scheme by Egan being a bit overwrought, so I'm giving this one a 7, which is still pretty good.
