After a number of villain-of-the-week type episodes, PAINTED FACES sees the return of the first season's mainmost villain, Lee Hei, to MARTIAL LAW. He plays background role here, setting the wheels of the plot in motion; his job is to kill the visiting mayor of Shanhai, as played by screen veteran James Hong. Hei sends a top assassin after the mayor and Sammo has to deal with him. There's nothing really out of the ordinary about this episode, which features the usual team chemistry and action hijinks to see it through; the opening bomb sequence recalls LETHAL WEAPON 2 most favourably.
