Dirty tricks in the run up to an election
Tweekums30 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When Crockett gives his opinion of a gubernatorial candidate, Tom Pierce, he sees on television he has no idea that later that night he will be arresting the man aboard a train-board brothel! It isn't long before pressure starts being applied for the case to be dropped as there isn't enough evidence despite the fact that he was literally caught with his trousers round his ankle. Photographs taken at the scene show that he was taken to the train by a member of his campaign team, somebody well known for his dirty tricks. Crockett and Tubbs start talking to local reporter Hank Frazier and he tells them of Peirce's rapid rise to the top of his party, they also learn that there were other skeletons in his closet including large campaign donations from dubious front companies. Crockett and Tubbs decide to question him about this but before they can do so he drops out of the race and disappears. Nobody knows where he has gone or even if he is still alive. That isn't the end of the case though and more serious crimes will be committed including blackmail and murder.

This was another decent episode with plenty of sleazy characters; in fact just about everybody they have to deal with is either actively breaking the law or at the very least applying it selectively for their own benefit. The way the episode is resolved doesn't exactly suggest that the creators have the highest opinion of politicians or the way they seem to get away with things that would see ordinary people in court... this isn't handled too heavily though. The guest stars gave solid enough performances although nothing to make the characters memorable... I guess that might be down to the characters being more mundane than many of the more glamorous villains we've seen in previous episodes... these ones are just a bunch of suits. The action was also rather lacking with a couple of off screen murders and the raid on the brothel... no chases, no shootouts and no explosions!

Better watching a second time!

Warning: Spoilers
Better watching a second time! Vote of Confidence must have had some real life advisers for real life feel with the script. First time around Vote of Confidence get across as a run of the mill episode. On a second viewing the viewers notices Price and his wife resemble a few real political characters. The speeches, mannerism, and political plays is text book dirty politics. When Crockett and Tubbs dig deeper in the case, the reporter is slime, the other candidates and political players are dirty too. Price gets caught on a brothel train which sets Vote Of Confidence into motion. Dead bodies, intrigue, scared witness, with a Southern flavors bubble to a stew for Vote of Confidence. Back in the 80's I thought Vote of Confidence was a ridiculous story, but now with the internet and cable news exposure such events as possible. The ending I got this time, when Price decided to re run looking at the ending I do not believe Price had a choice but to run, and the dirty money people behind Price took care of the political mess. Crockett and Tubbs could speculate but not prove anything. A strong ending about political corruption.

An episode so average you might not even remember watching it.

It's not that this is a bad episode, it's certainly not great, but there's not much worth criticizing here other than that it's the equivalent to watching paint dry.

The plot is garden variety: an immoral politico running for office gets snared in a sex scandal and the cops unravel the trail of corruption and double dealings. Sure there's plenty of potential, but the writers can't elevate the material beyond the mundane.

The trend of mediocre seems to pervade every aspect of the episode: directing, acting, production design, etc. While on one hand it's an improvement over the Caitlin Davies (Sheena Easton) episodes, it's a far cry from the first 6 episode of season 4. Hopefully we're heading back in the right direction.
