The 8th broadcast (Oct 31 1966), "Don't Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth" was actually second in production (May 31-June 3), the first since the series had been picked up by NBC (six months after the pilot was completed). This was also co-producer Robert Rafelson's first time behind the camera, as Davy finds himself the sole caretaker of a horse left by a little boy who confesses that his farmer father (Jim Boles) cannot afford to keep it. The Monkees prove to be little help with the daily chores, so it's up to Davy's jockey skills to make things right. Veteran radio funnyman Jerry Colonna made his final acting performance here, as Dr. Mann, a veterinarian who can't do anything with the horse, but manages to make their neighbor faint. This would have been the first appearance of Henry Corden as Monkees landlord Babbit, who hears Micky's werewolf impression and assumes the group is hiding a dog on the premises. Both Michael Nesmith tracks had been heard in previous episodes, "Papa Gene's Blues," from the debut LP, and "All the King's Horses," unreleased until 1990.
