Who Needs Steroids? Not This Guy!

This was a very memorable episode, especially for us baseball fans. The subject matter made this one of my all-time favorite stories in this show. Leo Durocher, a pretty famous player and manager for the New York Giants and Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, gets hit on top of the head from a ball batted by Herman eight blocks away.

Funny scenes include Durocher's trip to the Munster house and meeting his family (hint: he faints after seeing Herman) and his tryout session at the local ballpark. Herman shows the greatest power hitting and throwing in baseball history, so much so that - in addition to the laughs he brings with the slapstick - a team couldn't afford to have him because he would demolish the stadium he time he played!

The outrageous baseball scenes are funny no matter how many times I see them, which is probably a half dozen over the last 40-some years. Durocher did a nice job of acting, too. He was a natural in front of the camera. He was married to an actress so Hollywood was no stranger to him.

Herman Baseball Star

This is another favorite episode of mine from the show, it's another of the sports comedy episodes from this show, but this one is my favorite as it's once again Herman at his best.

Not much to really say as it's simply Herman trying out for the team. Simple concept but it's the execution that makes it stand out, it's just funny as this is more physical comedy though also just seeing Herman being well Herman. Really like some of Herman's reactions of excitement and childlike giddiness, it's probably what a lot of us whom love Baseball and may have had big dreams of playing for the Majors. Heck, it's probably what every new baseball player feels inside when their recruited to play for Minors and Majors.

And of course, there is the physical comedy, which is great, though I'd hardly call the game Herman is playing a game as it's more a demolition job. We see despite Herman having talent, he may 'be too good for his own good, let alone the sport in general. We see him hit a homer which demolishes a score board, catch a fly while running though a steel fence, the list goes on you must see to believe.

Herman may not make it to the majors but at least he made Baseball history.

Rating: 4 stars.
