STEVE GOES 60s ROCK N' ROLL.
tcchelsey26 August 2023
The last episode had Chip hooking up with a Hollywood starlet... so why not Steve meet a famous singer?

50s singing star Jaye P. Morgan, who at the time was appearing in nightclubs, plays a singer down on her luck. Steve's on a business trip in Hollywood with his boss and has the good fortune to meet Claudia Farrell, the once famous singer... now not doing much. Steve has an idea, and a good one. He recruits Robby to give her a few rock n ' roll music lessons (kind of stretching a point here), but it's worth a try.

There's actually a bit of truth to this episode as Jaye P eventually changed her own style and began appearing on game shows, foremost the outrageous GONG SHOW, and totally revamped her career. Nice bit with Robby and his band (also known as Don Grady's Reefs) singing "I'm a Good Man to Have Around the House" and the subsequent shindig joint where Jaye P reintroduces herself. She's good, but Robby's band ain't the Beach Boys.

Also in the cast is John Howard, best known as movie detective BULLDOG DRUMMOND, playing Dave, Steve's boss. Howard and Fred MacMurray were old friends at Paramount Pictures, so he turned up quite a bit on the show. Howard was a genuine WW II hero. According to military records, he was on a battleship where the captain was killed in a bombing and literally took over the ship and brought it to safety. Howard was subsuqently awarded several medals. To tell you the truth, that would have been a real deal cool story!

All in all, a sentimental episode, especially if you're a 60s music buff, or maybe had a band in the 60s! Lots of memories, and I give it a 10. From SEASON 7 remastered dvd box set.
