Barbara and Steve are concerned that Dodie is taking so much time in the bathroom because she is nervous about her first day of second grade. We can see however she isn't and they are quite surprised at her excitement. Steve is surprised she didn't ask for the car she's so independent!
The group of second graders wait outside the classroom guessing who their teacher is. The class includes Dodie and her friends Susan ( a young Jodie Foster ) and Margaret ( the actress is a familiar face for that era on television) . They unexpectedly find out their teacher is a man and all develop a crush on him! Dodie and Margaret bake him cookies but overdo the ingredients!
Steve makes the point to Dodie that everyone has crushes and everyone gets over them.
Dodie gets her head stuck in a fence at school and the teacher waits with her as she's freed . Barbara thanks him and invites him to dinner . Margaret is jealous as Steve finds out. She calls the house but won't talk to Dodie she just wants to know what is going on.
The crush ends when the teacher brings his fiancée and kisses her at the table. He also spills custard on himself! Margaret calls back Susan is with her and they want details! Dodie tells them and their crush ends too! As Ernie tells Dodie teachers are people too! Dodie is finding that pretty early!
Steve and Barbara check on Dodie before bed fearful she's disappointed but she has moved on quickly they are able to help her out with her concerns. All ends well.
