Going off the deep end
sol-kay8 July 2013
***SPOILERS*** Somewhat psychological study mixed in with a pinch of comedy about this borderline nut-case NYC landlord Ben Gionanni, Harry Guardino, suddenly flipping out of his skull and refusing to collect the monthly rent from his tenants! Feeling it's some kind of trick on Ben's part in order the have them evicted for non payment of rent in order to sell the apartment building to some real estate agency the tenants uncharacteristically demand he takes the rent money from them. Which has one of them Mr. Carrari, Al Lewis, get belated in his eye by a wild and out of control Ben Gionanni and soon presses charges of assault and battery against him.

As all this insanity is going on all of a sudden Ben's long suffering girlfriend Francesca, Marisa Pavan, has arrived by ship from Italy to get hitched or married to the crazed lunatic! With him facing jail time Ben's brain trust, Gerry Matthews Tom Brannum Johathan Goldsmith & Tom Slater, come to the police station to both give the out of control wacko legal advice as well as bail him out of jail! Well we soon learn that Ben has been suffering from an serious Oedipus Complex since he was a little boy. It was his late father who in trying to give his listless son Ben some responsibility in life who left him the apartment building to run and at times fix up. Now with his impending marriage to Francesca coupled with running the building was the straw that broke the camels back and eventually snapped Ben's mind!

***SPOILERS*** It's later when a crazed deranged and almost suicidal Ban stood up a tearful Francesca in church on her and his wedding day and him planning to burn down the hated apartment building with him and the tenants in it reality finally sunk in his badly confused and damaged brain. That with the help of the police that included the tender hearted and caring for his fellow man Det. Adam Flint, Paul Burke, and the aforementioned brain trust of his that Ben finally came to his senses. By the time that the "Naked City" episode finally ended Ben got his Mojo or act together with the help of Franceca, whom he thought left him and was on her way back to Italy, lovingly waiting at the docks or ship yard for him!

Warning: Spoilers
Interestingly, having been a kid when the series was aired, looking back...I am not sure this era actually existed at that time. 3 Cops spending a lot of time on stories that seem more like small town events on many of the episodes. Not to mention, watching these shows, you would think that there were l0 black people living in all of NYC. However, those were the times on TV. For the most part, this show is really great and true film noir. The stories on the old Italian, Polish or German ways is more for dramatic effect or even a throwback by the time 1963 came along. I won't get into the story of this episode too much...but it's silly and one of their lighter episodes, with a low believability quotient. It was difficult to sit through as opposed to some of their really great episodes.
