THE PROFESSIONALS – "Killer with a Long Arm" – 1978

Episode four of the of the 1977 to 1983, UK, action-crime series, THE PROFESSIONALS. Gordon Jackson is in charge of CI-5, a group of men drawn from the SAS, Police and other law enforcement agencies. Their mandate is to stop acts of terrorism and threats against the UK.

CI-5 gets called in when a motorcycle Policeman is shot making a routine traffic stop. The car the shooter was in is found an hour later. The Police discover a compartment in the car built to hold a long range sniping rifle. CI-5 figures it will be used to kill a government type.

Clues soon lead agents, Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins to look for a Greek hit man. The shooter, Michael Latimer, has been brought in to bump off a visiting Greek diplomat. Several Greek ex-pats, Milos Kirek and Alan Tivren, are less than amused with the present Greek Government. This will be their way of making a protest.

Hit man Latimer sees nothing wrong with calibrating his special rifle by shooting several people dead. CI- 5 soon narrows down the list of possible targets to the visiting diplomat. Collins and Shaw also pinpoint the likely location for the assassination attempt, the center court at the Wimbledon tennis tournament. From there, they figure a likely location for the shooter to fire from.

Doors are kicked, guns drawn and used, as the CI-5 agents stop the would be killers in a hail of bullets. Both Latimer and Kirek are killed in the exchange.

A slick bit of entertainment with plenty of violence to go around.

Gripping from start to finish

Warning: Spoilers
A long gun is brought into the country via ferry and the guys find out about it and its links to the Greek community. The bad guys use a golf course and an innocent golfer to test it for whatever reason .

Of course they're not thinking of the long arm of the law . Why is it here ? They're using it for a political murder at Wimbledon finals day and using an apartment within range . It's up to our heroes to find them and their apartment. Naturally they save the day but only just . It's also reminder of the importance of their jobs . If this happened in the real world Wimbledon would be cancelled forever or certainly for a few years . A disaster for all sports fans.

Warning: Spoilers
KILLER WITH A LONG ARM is the fourth episode of the show and another tension-packed one with an interesting European-flavoured plotline. The villain is a sniper on a mission who doesn't mind bumping off a few random people along the way, leading to an exciting high-rise climax and the climactic burst of violence that the show is well known for. Keen character interplay and a cameo from CARRY ON starlet Suzanne Danielle add to the fun.

Hitman Georgi. He has arrived all the way from Greece on a hovercraft. Only for an amateur to mess things up by shooting dead a policeman.

Georgi has bought a special long range rifle and the target is someone high profile who will be visiting the country.

Bodie & Doyle are tracking down a cop killer. However events are linked when a poacher nearly has his head blown off.

They contact the Greek community for clues.

Diane Keen plays a young revolutionary who likes to flirt with Georgi. She is another amateur as she gets knocked down while out shopping.

It leads to Bodie & Doyle to some high rise flats and maybe a clue as to where the target might be.

Apart from the alluring Diane Keen, there is also a young Jonathan Hyde in this episode as well as Suzanne Danielle looking as sexy as ever.

The episode has a tense shootout and some bickering between Bodie and Doyle. Aside from Georgi, his cohorts really were amateurs.
