An uncomfortable story that was still entertaining to watch.
kfo94946 November 2015
In this episode we are introduced to family violence as a mother with two children remarries a man that turns out to be a cad to everyone. Peter Whitney plays Andrew Bachtel that has an anger streak and also an alcohol problem. Even though we do not see the violence on the screen, it is clear that the step-father beats the two children, Heller and David Chase, along with the meek wife, Muriel.

Now it seems that the two young children have had enough of Andrew's beatings. The kids steal a gun with a purpose of stopping the beatings since their mother appears unable to confront the large frame step-father. And it is not long until the step-father comes home drinking and starts looking for the kids. A confrontation is inevitable.

There is much more to the story that needs to be seen by the viewer but the writer leaves no doubt that the families situation is dire. Peter Whitney, even though playing the rough in this story, does a nice job of making the viewer have disdain for his character at every turn. An uncomfortable story that is still appealing to watch.

Great Story About Spousal And Child Abuse
gatate-5774322 October 2023
Spousal and child abuse can take a toll on its victims. Such is the cast here in this episode of The Rifleman, "Heller". The mother felt defenseless in helping her children, and the children were distraught of what to do. Because of that, they turned to anger and revenge.

We also see towards the end of the program, because of the lack of paternal love, Heller takes a liking to Lucas when she and her brother approach Lucas and Mark sitting in the buckboard. Instead of addressing Lucas as "Mr. McCain", she says "Lucas". Notice the look on Lucas' face as he realizes this, and refers to Heller as "daughter". He was trying to send her a gentle message of, "you're too young". Then notice her reaction. The look on her face shows that she realized that he sees her as a daughter and not a companion.

Many folk may not have caught this, but the writers did a great job in depicting the emotions and mindset of abused youth.

Gigi Perreau, Peter Whitney, and Don Grady did a fantastic job in this episode. It's one of my favorite episodes.

Good episode without any Gunplay

Warning: Spoilers
THE RIFLEMAN – Heller – 1960

Peter Whitney guest stars in this episode of the popular, 1958 -63, western series, THE RIFLEMAN. Chuck Connors plays a rancher-farmer who is a world class hand with a Winchester rifle.

Peter Whitney is a drunken slob who beats his wife, K.T. Stevens and children, Don Grady and Gigi Perreau endlessly. Every time he gets tossed in jail to sleep it off, the family gets another round of whippings.

The daughter breaks into the local general store one night to steal a six gun and some ammo. She intends to end the families suffering for good. Perreau is caught by some town folk before she can get away. She does however manage to hide the gun and ammo before being grabbed.

Sheriff Paul Fix asks Connors if he would mind dropping off the girl at her farm. The gun theft had gone unnoticed and the store owner did not press any charges. Connors agrees to delivering the girl off to her mother, Stevens.

The next day, Perreau and her brother, Grady, sneak back to town and retrieve the stolen gun and ammo. They are seen by Connors' son, Johnny Crawford. Crawford tells his father who quickly rides over to Whitney's ranch.

What Connors finds, is a whimpering Whitney on his knees begging Perreau not to shoot him. Perreau tells the swine that they have had enough of his beatings etc. Connors calmly talks the girl into handing over the pistol. Connors then drags Whitney to jail. Whitney is charged with wife beating, abuse, drunk in public and everything else Sheriff Fix can think of. Whitney gets several years and the family gets to start a new life.

Acting Was Top Notch

Warning: Spoilers
Wow I've been a Rifleman fan since I first watched in 1962. Still in 2023 I'm moved by the realistic acting and no schmaltz like say Bonanza. So glad this show is now available to capture a new audience as it is phenomenal in writing, acting and directing.

Heller is memorable and disturbing as lots of people grew up in such a home. I was rather afraid of my father when he drank so watching this as a kid hit home.

Heller must take matters into her own hands and confront the man who has ruined their lives since their mother is victimized and passive. When Heller played by Gigi Perreau tries to summon the courage to go after Bechtel and speaks to her dead father for help it's extraordinary acting and when she is talked down from killing him by Lucas well it's sealed. Beautiful girl and a powerhouse of emotions even at the end with that disappointing gesture when Lucas thinks of her as a daughter. Don Grady showed such talent, too bad he was wasted in My Three Sons. Of course Whitney can play a good guy and an evil guy. That's what I liked best about The Rifleman a drama that worked in every way. Only wish Gigi had won an Emmy for this episode.

Creepy story that needed a better ending
Johnny_West4 September 2020
Peter Whitney, who specialized in being a despicable father in several episodes of various television shows of the 1950s, returns to abuse his newest TV kids and his wife.

In this story Whitney does a great job of beating on his kids and his wife in a very well choreographed and realistic manner. It was creepy and disturbing to watch him yelling at his family, shoving them around, and slapping them.

His two step-children, Heller (what a weird name for a girl) and David want revenge and relief from the beatings. They make a plan to steal a gun from Cora's store, and kill their step-dad.

The story itself spends an uncomfortable amount of time on Whitney verbally abusing his family. He also gets abusive to the townfolks.

Considering all the times that Lucas has shot people to death for any number of reasons, the first time I saw this episode I was surprised Lucas had not taken a page out of the Bible to justify bringing the hammer down on Whitney.

The children are played by Don Grady, who later was one of Fred MacMurray's children on "My Three Sons." What a great upgrade from Peter Whitney! Heller is played by Gigi Perrou, who played the daughter of Philip Carey (Dr. Simon Battle - also an upgrade over Peter Whitney) in the next season (episode 33, Death Trap).

Those kids really deserved Justice in this episode. Lucas tells them that by humiliating Whitney, he has been punished, but I disagree. I never liked that the wife and kids stayed in the same home, and nothing really changed.
