The Godfather is interested
bkoganbing10 November 2014
An old Korean war buddy is the Jim Rockford client in this episode of The Rockford Files. Hector Elizondo is a fashion photographer and he is convinced that a model he's got a thing for played by Pamela Hensley did not die in a car crash as reported to and by the LAPD.

Hensley is a person of interest that the cops would like to question in a murder of her boyfriend. The boyfriend was a connected mobster and there's a sinister godfather type figure in the background played by Thayer David who can be the last word in sinister.

There's also a nice bit in this story from Ken Swofford who plays a Rockford type PI in Seattle. It's where the trail for Pamela Hensley ends.

Can't tell too much more here except that Pamela Hensley is the girl in every man's nightmare.

Melencholy Rockford

Warning: Spoilers
Jim's old Korean war buddy John Mitchelli (Hector Elizondo) calls Jim in to help him find a missing model, Jennifer (Pamela Hensley). But John or "Mitch" isn't the only one looking for her. The cops have made her the number one suspect in a murder of a member of the mob, so the mob is interested in her whereabouts as well. When Jennifer's body turns up in a fiery crash, it looks like the story is over. But Mitch insists he saw her in Seattle and she's still alive.

This episode is a bit uneven performance wise. Carl Burrell, the head mobster played by Thayer David is very effective. He's powerful and means business. Thayer played Dragon in "The Eiger Sanction" as well as Sandor in "Dark Shadows". He's good at being creepy and powerful. Ken Swofford makes his first of four appearances on the series, this time as Seattle Private Eye Floyd Ross ($150 a day plus expenses). There's a good scene as we see how cheap Rockford can be as they try and negotiate the price. Unfortunately Swofford doesn't get a lot of screen time in this episode.

On the other hand Pamela Hensley is less than effective as Jennnifer, the girl of Mitch's dreams. She seems a little stiff and unnatural. She is beautiful, but its hard to see what a photographer like Mitch, who deals with beautiful women all day, sees in her. Hensley was a Universal contract player who went on to do multiple appearances on "Matt Houston" and was Agent 35 in the awful "Get Smart" movie, "The Nude Bomb".

Nor is Elizondo's characterization of Mitch all that interesting. He fared much better with his next appearance on "Rockford" as Frank Falcone, undercover cop.

There is a nice scene with Rocky upset that Jim forgot to pick him up from the auto repair shop and another that lets Dennis (Joe Santos) finally stop just running plates and getting information for Jim, but appear outside the office as a friend, not a cop contact. Luis Delgado, who appears in most episodes as a cop, manages to get in this one as a waiter (but who knows? POerhaps he was working undercover!)

The film of a supposedly young Rockford and Elizondo in Korea was a good idea but poorly executed. It's obvious they just shot it. Too bad they didn't have younger doubles or a clip from an old movie they did together where they really were 20 years younger. This "old" film is just not convincing.

Rockford takes Seattle

In what is another solid installment of a great series, our hero is hired, or should I say begged, to help find a woman who's presumably dead but is possibly in Seattle of all places. The one doing the hiring is Hector Elizondo, who's once again very good as usual, as he and Rockford are old war buddies. I think he was very fond of Jennifer(Pamela Hensley), as she was a top model for him; he's a fashion photographer who doesn't believe she was killed in a car accident as the authorities do. Thayer David(Rocky)has a small role as Carl Birrell, who basically looks like an albino(he just about played the same albino role in 1976's Eiger Sanction)who wants this woman dead because he thinks she killed his nephew, which it turns out she did, of course. Ken Swofford also stars as a fellow investigator in Seattle, as you'll see his face in other episodes in future seasons. After John(Elizondo)is killed, Rockford indeed goes to Seattle to locate Jennifer; Hensley's acting is below average compared to James Garner's, who can play with a range of emotions. Listen for Rockford to utter the "that doesn't make any sense" line here, as he says this many times during the entire run of the series. It's always fine seeing scenes with Rocky and Dennis, and we get a few here. Speaking of Seattle, and according to the credits, nothing was filmed there, but at least the producers filmed a scene with rain. Rockford eventually figures out that the woman did indeed kill the nephew for her own personal reasons, and following a mini car chase and being shot at by her, he finally catches up to her, and won't fall for her charm. This is a fine episode which I would recommend for Rockford fans.
