Let me put it this way: if freaky weird costumes are your thing... Or more succinctly, with this one the costume department had their hands full, but the real-laughs department, now come on, they were fast asleep.

And Melissa Joan Hart in the Little Bo Peep costume looking like an overblown doll really backfired, as she obviously had to spend most of the shooting schedule looking atrociously silly onto to be recorded for posterity looking silly and unfunny for no damn good reason at all.

This show is made for little girls, okay. But even back then, 1996, well, 2000 by this episode, little girls, I figure, would have had a mentality much higher than SOME of the lower points reached in this series. I'm talking about the CRINGE-WORTHY, absolutely DORKY stuff that happens, well, at a rate of... well, every 30 seconds?

There is a marked improvement in the current season, as I have reported previously. But it is as if the season is slipping backwards again already. A hell of a lot of costumer here, it must have taken a considerable lot of effort to get all of this stuff together, leftovers from former movie projects, I suppose, but no matter, clearly a lot of work and planning for such a little kiddie's show.

Kiddie's show? The jokes go three ways: Over the heads of the target audience because they are too advanced (except for babysitters watching along), or, over the heads of the target audiences because they reference stuff from years and years gone by, and as for the third option, so dorky and dumb that everybody can understand.

I am not arguing that a whole generation loved this show. It lasted for seven seasons, don't I know it, and I bought the lot virtually sight unseen, the cute blonde girl with the cute green-eyed cat on the DVD box cover sort of assured me it looks way, way cool, it's gonna be way, way cool. It's obviously been loved, so it's gonna be great! Gee...

The supporting cast might have improved this season, but the show remains on very thin ice, with the people thinking it up... well... I can just picture them... laughing as they churned it out... I shake my head at (most) of it...

...and very few little girls would fall for it today.

{I am referring to the sight gags, like stuff popping up on screen in clumsy unfunny ways, the basic set-up has HUGE potential, but the execution is mostly, well, DORKY}

This show also has very powerful leanings to overt radical feministic ideas regarding putting men in their place. Observe the (randy male) pumpkin getting turned into pumpkin pie for coming on to Sabrina, and Frankenstein dumbly getting led away like a sheep. Two laughable little emasculating examples, but the entire series is full of them, echoing CHARMED.

It seems the fervent critic of SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH is back.
