Emotionally Gripping. Teen Titans?

Warning: Spoilers
I will always have this show as one of my all time favorites. And with good reason. Here is a show that pushes the envelope so hard, so masterfully, that in the midst of cartoon tomfoolery, random zaniness and spot on humor, you as a adult viewer could be drawn into the story with genuine dramatic emotion and (in the case of this episode) rage. In no way are most people prepared to love the Teen Titans as much as you do by the end of season 2. When pressed by fans (like me) to watch the show, new viewers are not normally impressed by the first half of season one. But we would all be remiss if we ignored the fact that this show knows character and it makes us care, genuinely. Remember, however you feel on the subject, Teen Titans is a children's show. Yet here we are, adults, wishing Terra the worst, feeling terrible for Beast Boy(the comic relief, we all thought in season one) and being awestruck by Ron Perlman's performance as Slade. This show is a treasure, as seen clearly in so many episodes, not the least of which 'Betrayal'. The story unwinds in superb fashion. Sure, Terra could have been on the team longer so as to really have the titular betrayal hit hard, but she really didn't have to be. Our characters, the ones we genuinely care for because of the stories these writers have given us, make us feel all the right emotions exactly when we need to. Here is a children's show character, Terra, genuinely despicable, utterly hated and truly threatening. And not because she talks in an annoying voice or asks us where her red backpack is five times in a row. She is awful because of her actions, dangerous because of her powers and her failing convictions and despised because she broke Beast Boys heart. (Tha's not okay, ya'll) This episode could have fallen flat. An expected betrayal, an unsurprising twist with few consequences or ones we didn't care about. But because this is Teen Titans, we cared. Because this is Teen Titans, we were glued to the screen. Because this is Teen Titans, this episode was amazing.
