Chrissy is going through an uncharacteristic period of depression. Then, she becomes easy prey for a "guru" named Rama Mageesh (veteran voice-over artist Michael Bell, "The Transformers: The Movie"). Jack immediately is suspicious of the guy, and his suspicions are confirmed when Mageesh openly admits to Jack that he's a scam artist. But Jack & Janet still have to worry about losing Chrissy to *this* guy, who's planning on creating a retreat in Big Sur.
'Chrissy and the Guru' is full of solid, hearty laughs, with Jack hilariously reacting to some standard "Chrissy-isms". The B plot with the Ropers involves Stanley furious about being potentially audited by the IRS. But the episode is at its best when focusing on Chrissy's dilemma. Everybody watching at home can tell that Mageesh is a creep; how soon will Chrissy wise up?
There are some very bright moments with Jack & Janet pretending to leave the apartment, then sneaking back in through the kitchen window, hoping to catch the guru doing something sleazy. Eventually, we get a nice wrap-up when the lovable Chrissy shows that she is not *that* naive. And the coda is priceless when Jack overhears a conversation between Chrissy and someone on the phone, involving Big Sur, and automatically leaps to the wrong conclusion. Another classic 'Three's Company' misunderstanding!
