APRIL 1910 Sarah is pregnant again. This time by Thomas the Chauffeur.
As younger servants were not permitted to marry, Sarah searches for a way out and comes up with a plan which 'covers' Thomas as well as herself. Unfortunately for her, Thomas does not go along with it which would result in Sarah's dismissal. However; as Lady Marjorie is away at the time of Sarah's 'news', Richard comes up with a different plan, but then Lady Marjorie comes home, and receives news that James is on his way back home from India! All this causes more complications, when Lady Marjorie finds out about the expected child and hits the roof! This in turn leads to 'subtle' blackmail from Thomas which gets all parties re-thinking their plans.
Certainly one of the very best episodes towards the close of this second season - 'Upstairs, Downstairs' having now become a firm favourite on our screens and is sure to be back! There's an unsettling scene for viewers who've been with the series from its early days when Sarah says sadly to Thomas: 'Please don't leave me Tom - you're all I got now...' It immediately conjures up images of Emily who hanged herself years before...
