The Gospel According to Uncle Skip
kgraovac25 November 2023
The family pays host to Michael's old mentor for their 20-year reunion. He impresses the boys but does the opposite for Valerie.

This is a fantastic episode -- one of the best of the entire series. The script is very RHODA-like with lots of great character moments. Even though the series is still new, everything clicks here.

Gerald Gordon is terrific as "Uncle" Skip who becomes an instant hero to the boys. These days his "toxic masculinity" would be looked down on by some. David starts being a jerk to his girlfriend and Willie becomes a big potty-mouth with major attitude. It's also great to see MTM alumna Carmine Caridi as Willie's chauvanistic soccer coach.

One of the funniest scenes of the whole series is when Willie tests Val's limits and ends up with a mouth full of soap for cursing at her. Later, when she enters his room, he deadpans "Did you bring a little Ajax to finish the job?". Danny Ponce was so well-cast as smart-aleck Willie and is the most believable of the boys as Valerie Harper's offspring in both looks and attitude.

Valerie gives a very Mike Brady-esque speech at the end but it does not come off as cheesy. The whole episode still has that classy MTM vibe buzzing through it. If you only watch a handful of episodes of this series, make sure this is one of them.
