Blue the mule...
thmoorer5 April 2022
Was invaluable to the operation. Mules - or "Jakes" as they were often called in Western North Carolina - could haul logs out of forests where tractors couldn't go. And they didn't tear up the land nor need a road cut. Sometimes you'll find logging trails with short turnouts called "Jake holes". These are on steep grades. If a team loses control and is tearing down the trail, a team ahed of them could pull into the Jake hole. That's all I know about it. Except that mule teams still are prized to surgically haul timber out to avoid clear cutting.

I only gave this an eight..

Warning: Spoilers
I only gave this episode an eight because of Ike and Cora Beth.

Why is it that these two stuck up individuals always look to someone else to bail them out of their troubles? Trying to live high off the hog when they cannot afford it. Then blaming John Walton when they end up the crick without a paddle. Why was it John's fault when their greed got the best of them? Why must John with a big family to support give up his financial freedom to help after the nastiness Ike gave him. The "we are family" only happens when they get in trouble. Livy is right when she said that if the shoe was on the other foot that Ike and Cora Beth would not help them out.

Now poor John's dreams of an easier life and fun times with his family went up in smoke just like the mortgage did!

A great episode! (Except for Ike, and Corabeth!!).

Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode!! I DO NOT like when Ike, and Corabeth decide to "Crash" the Walton family's celebration about being debt free!! Ike and Corabeth should NOT have discussed their finances in front of the everyone at the celebration!! This has always bothered me about this particular episode!! I have always, basically, enjoyed each, and every episode of this lovely family series!! Although it wasn't quite the same without Richard Thomas, and the passing of Will Geer, and of course Ellen Corby's stroke!! (But at least she was able to come back, right??!!). "John Boy" was ALWAYS my favourite character "Hands Down!!"

lumber for the mill
fabertom9 February 2021
Poor Blue. he had to drag all the lumber down from the mountain to fulfill this contract. Things did not add up here. Chopping those trees down, trimming them, dragging a 10' log down a mountain with a mule must have taken hours to complete.

Something missed

This episode overall is great! It is wonderful to see the family pull together to get the big order accomplished. Nice to see Olivia back to her usual self after the last episode when she had her menopause issues. However, I did notice an inconsistency. When Olivia picks up Cora, Beth and they head over to the Reverends to measure for curtains, the truck is full of wood posts to be delivered. When Olivia pulls up to the church with Cora Beth, the back of John's truck is empty. Where are the wood posts?

Even with the inconsistency, it is overall a wonderful episode!!! I am trying to drag out this review, because I have not met the minimum number of characters - so frustrating.
