No "there" there

I've written previously that I consider Ralph Waite the finest actor in the whole cast. He was simply a natural in the role of John Walton.

I'm not sure if the failure of this episode was primarily Ralph Waite the director, or the script itself. Or possibly both.

Linda Purl's southern accent was just too much. Way too much. The plot itself just seemed to drag endlessly. I could find nothing in this episode to make me want to hold on.

A very unusual failure for a 5th season episode of this stellar series.

I'm enjoying a re-watch of this. It's better produced and written than I could have hoped. The performances range from very good to at least competent. I think I may have to turn off if we see Linda Purl as Curtis' sister again however. We had better American accents in our Hebridean production of Arsenic and Old Lace and she's actually American. She seems to have gone on to play Helen Keller - well that role had one advantage for her. Nice singing voice tho.

Linda Purl was atrocious

Watch this episode only if there is literally nothing else on the entire plant to watch. Linda Purl was so horrible in her role as Curt's sister that the episode is unwatchable. Her southern accent is beyond false, making every one of her scenes FF material.

Worst episode in my opinion

I love every episode I have seen so far but this one is just not good. And it is for no other reason than guest star Linda Purl - sorry Linda if you ever read this but your acting was terrible and that accent......yikes! All the regulars are the only reason I gave it one star because they were amazing.

Shades of Barney Fife!!!

Poor girl can't sing, not a lick. Even in a country church everybody would be looking around to see if somebody needed help. Not that she could act any better but then neither can Jason.

Glad Grandpa finally got offended. He's just not the same if he's not screaming and kicking walls. And poor Olivia just doesn't like anything Jason does.....it's an hour show so let's stick to what she does like. The Waltons went downhill after John Boy became the know all authority on everything. Again like Andy Griffith when Goober grew a beard and was suddenly a philosopher.

Gawd-Awful Garbage

Never saw this episode in the 70s but watched it in 2023 to see what all the fuss was about in these reviews. Must have been the only script they could come up with after Grandma's sudden stroke in real life scrapped the decent storylines in production. Between the awful cowboy singer and Linda Purl's Scarlet-Ohara-on-steroids fake Atlanta accent this episode comes real close to a zero rating. Only thing missing from her was a swoon and a fiddle dee dee! Jason falling for a married woman is preposterous. Love the series and cast regulars to bits, but this episode in the bottom of the proverbial barrel.
