Xena goes to meet up with her old pal. None other than Goliath. Goliath is working for the Philistines trying to root out the Israelites.
I love that they gave the biblical character, Goliath, some layers and a backstory. He's not just a big bully wanting to beat up the little guy for no reason.
We get some more of Xena's backstory as we find out she was in a battle with Goliath against another giant, Gareth. Xena was injured and Goliath wouldn't leave her side, which allowed Gareth to kill Goliath's family. Now Dagon, captain of the Philistine army, is offering him big money and information so Goliath can track Gareth down. I wouldn't have thought it would be hard to track a giant down, but here we are. Lol.
David is played by, Antony Starr, who has enjoyed some recent fame in the show 'The Boys.' David and his brother Jonathon are captured by the Philistines. Gabs crushes on David. Unfortunately, David is engaged to be married. Nice touch as David recited Psalm 23. I never really cared for the bible stuff they had on the show, but it was ok here. It didn't feel overwhelming or preachy like some things later in the series. It just seems like they took a story and put their own spin on it.
Xena is conflicted because Goliath is her old friend who saved her, which cost him his family's lives. Yet, she knows she must stop him. I'm glad she wasn't the one to kill her old friend. Good job by LL conveying her sadness at the loss of her old friend, especially when you hear her voice talking to Goliath in her head as she thinks about him.
I thought the action was really good in this one with lots of different action scenes. Love the perspective type of stuff they did given that Goliath is a giant. They did a pretty good representing that in the 90s.
Overall, a solid episode. Lots of action, bits of humour, drama, unrequited love, and some backstory for Xena. Plus a take on a biblical story. Might have been interesting if they did some flashbacks. But the flashbacks in the series didn't start until midway through this season with 'Destiny.' Look for Goliath's old nemesis, Gareth, to show up in a future episode, 'A Day in the Life.' 8/10.
