An all black cavalry unit sets out on a special mission.

Unlike the plot listed, the story is not about one black man in a cavalry unit but about an all black cavalry unit that has a special assignment.

An all black US Cavalry unit sets out on a special assignment. Only the unit Sergeant knows about the instructions and where to be at a certain time. When the unit arrives they pick up an Indian Chief that is to be taken to an outpost for talks about a peace treaty. But some Indians are not happy with the treaty and will try to keep the Chief from making the conference.

When the Sergeant is killed by the rival Indians, it places Corporal Smith (Sammy Davis Jr) in charge of the unit. Cpl. Smith has seen Indians attack a village and has little care for the Indians. He rather see a dead Indian than a life one. But the Sergeant has given the Corporal an order.

An interesting story that played out well on the screen. Mr Davis did a nice job that made for an entertaining watch. There was a few rough spots but overall it was a fine watch.

Sammy Davis shines here

What an awesome surprise for me this story, with a superb anti hero character, a Black soldier who doesn't love the Indians that much. We ordinary see White soldiers not loving Indians, or Black people. Here this role is given to a Black...See what I mean? what a unusual scheme. I LOVE IT. And the ending is for me so exquisite.

Mission

Warning: Spoilers
Sammy Davis jr once again shows that he had the acting chops for drama. He did not always have to slum it with the Rat Pack.

He plays Corporal Smith a soldier in an all black cavalry unit. Their mission is to escort a native Indian for treaty talks.

Smith has no love for Indians in a war that has seen a lot of innocent families killed.

When the unit comes into attack from a rival tribe who do not want peace at any costs. They demand that the chief is released to them.

Smith finds himself left in charge and has to decide how best to save his men and an Indian chief he detests.

There is a twist to the story as Smith buys time. It looks like the ultimate sacrifice.
