To get her home back
bkoganbing5 September 2015
Although Joan Crawford doesn't exactly bring images of a pioneer woman to mind, miscast she does her best in this Zane Grey Theater western about a Confederate widow from the late Civil War who tries to reclaim her husband's land with her son Don Grady.

The problem is that as a Confederate his land was put up for auction and now Scott Forbes has settled on it. But Crawford's determined to get her home back one way or another.

The plot premise was all right, but the treatment was way too heavy. A much lighter touch was required for this story.

Still fans of Joan Crawford might this a different and strange kind of Joan to view.

Not quite a merry widow.

Warning: Spoilers
Fifty something Joan Crawford kept trying to remain relevant even as movie roles dried up. Like others from her era, she turned television, and eventually, a role on a western series comes to everyone who works on TV. She did several episodes of Dick Powell's "Zane Grey Theater", and in this one, she's a civil war widow with a young son coming back to her house and finding it occupied by Scott Forbes who has purchased it legally. She's determined to stay, and so was he, and obviously a boy needs a father so it's obvious what happens.

Crawford had done only a few westerns dating back to the silent era so she's not the first actress I think of when I think of a woman on horseback. She doesn't really get a lot of meaty material here, and there's far too much going on in the period of half an hour for this to really develop a strong plot. Crawford seems just slightly too old for her part, and having one emotional breakdown is also out of character for her. Not unwatchable, but not one of TV's finest half hours either.
