Correction on the part of actor Charlie Briggs (the character Paul West).

Warning: Spoilers
Another reviewer was wrong... Paul West is not the son of Irene; he is her second husband.

Irene had been married to Simon West, the other son of Malachi West. After Simon was hanged for being a Confederate spy, Malachi forced/coerced Irene to marry Paul, in order to carry on his family name. That explains the bitterness that Irene feels toward Malachi West.

As for the episode itself, it is quite intriguing. Great acting on all parts, especially Raymond Massey and Cara Williams. The ending was a bit awkward, with the previously hostile Sheriff acting friendly toward Detective Brady... but there is not much time in a 30-minute TV show to close out the story.

I rate "Seed of Evil" 8 stars.

At last a good surprise...

The other reviewer told the ending had a 180 degree turn. I agree totally, and that's PRECISELY why that's a good surprise. The only thing important for this kind of ending is to be realistic, acceptable, believable. And for me that is. Maybe one day we'll see a hero slipping on a banana skin after killing all the baddies It is very shocking for audiences, used to something else, but why not? See what I mean?

Raymond Massey!

Warning: Spoilers
Just watch this episode this morning on Grit. I really liked it how it showed an early private detective in the old west. SPOILER

And the final shot of the bad guy with his head next to the rope that he planned on using on the hero, was pretty awesome.

Just did not play well.

In a rather macabre episode for a Zane Grey show, we have the West family that is headed by an older gentleman named Malachi and his daughter-in-law, Irene, and her retarded son, Paul. Malachi's son died in the Civil War and he still has bad blood for the person that killed him. it just so happens that the man that killed his son, Sam Brady, is coming to town to open a detective agency. Malachi and Irene will now get their chance for revenge.

This is a strange episode that never really clicked. The concept of the story seemed like a nice plot but never gain any interest and ended in a manner that was lackluster. Raymond Massey, that played Malachi, always gives a nice performance in any production but in this show the story did not do justice to the actor. Cara Williams, that played Irene, was as beautiful as ever but her character was so bizarre that her performance never flowed. By the time the ending was approaching, it seemed that the story did a 180* turn and headed in a different direction. This was a story that never seemed to have a proper ending and fell flat.
