Another reviewer was wrong... Paul West is not the son of Irene; he is her second husband.
Irene had been married to Simon West, the other son of Malachi West. After Simon was hanged for being a Confederate spy, Malachi forced/coerced Irene to marry Paul, in order to carry on his family name. That explains the bitterness that Irene feels toward Malachi West.
As for the episode itself, it is quite intriguing. Great acting on all parts, especially Raymond Massey and Cara Williams. The ending was a bit awkward, with the previously hostile Sheriff acting friendly toward Detective Brady... but there is not much time in a 30-minute TV show to close out the story.
I rate "Seed of Evil" 8 stars.
