tedious at first but then enjoyable dementia follows
HEFILM6 July 2006
It takes a while to get going, but once you get to the Blood Ranch it's sort of a homage to Texas Chainsaw Massacre with more than a little touch of Bloodsucking Freaks thrown in for good measure. Sure it's degenerate, but at least creatively so, a non stop parade of demented and oddly funny torture scenes that at the very least boast some imagination--no sense ultimately but it all has a loopy nutty quality. Blood Ranch seems like it will never end, which is a good and bad thing, it's pretty high-powered oddness. Vernon Wells has only one scene, but it's a long good scene and actually from that moment on the rest of the movie works.

The ending leaves a bunch of things hanging that don't have to be left that way and as I said the start is pretty slow going--though there is a decent car chase and some nice cold desert photography/videography.

Much more original in total than the dull ultimately useless The Hills Have Eyes remake.

The funniest horror movie I've ever seen
pivo1245 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I give this movie a 5 because of two reasons. 1: It is the worst horror movie I've ever seen. 2: The horrible acting, camera shots, and special effects made me laugh so hard, I practically choked. If you're a fan of B-movies with such bad acting that its funny; pick this movie up. If you're looking for a horror movie; keep on looking. Since i got to fill up lines, Ill add some more reasons why this movie is a 5. At one part, a guy picks up a chainsaw and hacks off a girls arm. Blood spray was kinda cool but nothing special. The funny part was that you can tell the chainsaw was never on and that the sound was a crappy recording. Heres another moment that made me die laughing. A guys head was decapitated and placed on a plate in the foreground of the camera. Instead of watching the action in the background, I continued to watch the head blink and move throughout the scene. Talk about hilarious.

Not quite as bad as I feared but still pretty poor.
poolandrews8 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Blood Ranch starts as four friends, Jason (Dayton Knoll) his sister Jen (Season Hamilton) along with lovers Mark (Mike Faiola) & Val (Madeleine Lindley) on their way to a festival stop off to pick up a hitchhiker, an English guy named Alex (Daniel O'Meara). As they speed down the isolated desert highway they almost run-over a girl named Megan (Shalena Hughes) who is in a terrible state, then they are harassed & run off the road by a black A-Team type van, Jen, Mark, Val & Alex all head off into the distance in search of the nearest town while Mark stays behind with the car & Megan. The four travelling teens quickly stumble into heaps of trouble though as they seek help in at a ranch called 'The Web' owned by a psycho named Spider (Jim Fitzpatrick) who along with his disciples torture, rape, kill & eat anyone unfortunate enough to run into them...

Produced & directed by Corbin Timbrook I have to admit that Blood Ranch wasn't quite as bad as I had originally feared it would be but even then I would be very hard pressed to describe Blood Ranch as a good film or indeed anywhere near approaching a good film. The script by Antonio Hernandez is a sort of uneven horror comedy that to my eyes is a The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) wannabe. The basic set-up is alright if unoriginal, a group of teens travelling across America become victims of some gang of killer psychos who decorate their house with body parts as well as hang people up & torture them with chainsaws. For the majority of it's running time Blood Ranch is an unremarkable cheap low budget horror teen slasher that isn't the worst of it's kind but nowhere near the best either, then towards the end there's a very unnecessary rape sequence in which a filthy dirty old man rapes a young woman which I suppose is OK since Blood Ranch is an exploitation film but on a personal level if it's one thing that I find distasteful & have a hard time enjoying it's rape. I'm no prude & I certainly ain't that bothered by the scene but I just don't like the idea of a young woman being tied up then brutally raped for no reason, maybe I'm a hypocrite because I did enjoy seeing the other woman tied up & having her arm cut off with a chainsaw but I just have a hard time gaining any pleasure from seeing someone raped. The film moves along at a reasonable pace & it's watchable enough on a low budget teen slasher level, but that isn't saying much is it? The character's are pretty poor as well, there seems to loads of bad guy's running around on the ranch & a whole bunch of caged female victims but we never get to know any of them or what happens to most of them either & have little purpose in the film.

Director Timbrook does alright, the film looks competent & he at least keeps his camera steady so you can actually see what's going on. The gore levels are very disappointing here, there's a bit of blood splatter, there's a cut off arm, a decapitated head & nothing else worth mentioning. In fact more than half of the group of six teens survive! I always thought the reason behind having lots of annoying teen character's in slasher flicks is so you can kill them off, right? I guess Timbrook didn't realise that. The comedy elements are also very hit & miss, to start off with the film is very serious & then towards the end introduces various silly bits like someone playing darts using another mans bare back as a dartboard, almost nude killers running around in just their underwear, a midget woman & a whole cage of captive teen girls again in just their underwear.

Technically the film is alright, it's reasonably well made considering it's a low budget straight-to-DVD shot on a camcorder type horror film. The acting varies, some do OK while other's are terrible with Daniel O'Meara's English accent truly awful although most of the girls in it are nice & easy on the eye.

Blood Ranch is better than I expected it was going to be, then again considering I thought it was going to be one of the worst films ever that's not saying much. I'd say slightly below average although if your absolutely desperate it might pass 90 odd minutes without sending you to sleep.

Complete waste of time
ortega-125 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I'm writing this review mostly with the intention of warning you not to waste any of your time with this, since the rating for it appears to be inexplicably high (5.1!?). I was attracted by this DVD cover, which is pretty cool and very promising, but unfortenately it just didn't deliver. For the record, I'm a horror fan and fond of trash movies too. That is, the good ones. When the budget is very, very low, you've gotta compensate that with something. Could be lots of well crafted but still cheap gore effects, nudity, believable violence, a clever script, unbelievable sickness... something! Blood Ranch doesn't. All the situations and dialogs are both cliché and fake. Everything in the movie is a rip-off from something else, only worsened. The only rape scene is ridiculously fake and chicks won't even show their breasts, which is the opposite that the cover from the DVD implies. Forget about this one, rent Cabin Fever or anything else instead.

Possibly the worst "horror" flic ever
dophilus6 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Well, well well. Where do I start. I have been a fan of horror/splatter movies my whole life. I really like when the movie takes me by surprise and makes me stop breathing. I have seen so many movies in this genre and many of the has been rather bad and tedoius, but in some way I have enjoyed then anyway. So what defines a good horror flic? The script? The camera? The actors? the number of kills? The sound? Or is it the amount of really nasty scenes? Blood Ranch has absolutely nothing of the above. Just look at the editing and camera-work in the movie. I have never seen anything so poor in my life. Take the car chase in the beginning. In one scene they are driving on a highway, and the next clip they are on a "dirtroad", and then back to the highway again. Over and over again in the same scene. Not to mention the use of same clips for different parts in the movie. The editing in whole are just a joke, my 13 year old boy edits our home filmed clips way better to be honest. Blood ranch really tries to be all that and fails miserably from the very start. The story isn't much to talk about. It's been done hundreds of times before in different versions. But it's Blood Ranch strongest part, because it's truly weird. I have so much bad things to say about this movie and I could go on and on about it. Like when (spoiler) the madman shows the girl the chopped of head they are going to have for dinner. In that scene you can clearly see the actor moving his eyelids constantly, and thats kinda strange for a chopped off head.

I will end this before all this becomes a ranting of misery over this movie. My final word will be a plea that the version that I saw is NOT the finished version, and that I got ripped off buying a bad illegal screener instead of a legal release. This one will sit in my bookshelf as the all time high disappointment in my horror collection.

This movie is not good anywhere.
edvin_8726 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is one of the worse movies i have ever seen, I thought all of the movie was a joke, me and my neighbor watched this movie and we first read about it here at IMDb and our expectations where high after reading about what the movie was about, we thought it would be like "WRONG TURN", "THE HILLS HAVE EYES" and "WOLF CREEK" but this movie was nothing like all of those movies. The movie contains the worse acting i have ever seen, and it is even filmed in a very weird and cheap way, just like in a low budget movie. Okey here we go the movie starts of with that some peoples car brokes down and they need to go on by foot and comes to a place called "BLOOD RANCH" where the most sick and retarded people lives and basically kills people. You may think that the movie should be good like somewhere in the movie but seriously i never found it. And the end just wait for the very end and try not to laugh! This is my first comment I'm sad it would be such a hard one against the movie, but it was hard to stay neutral and write all of the good stuff to, because they never was any.

Utter drivel
macscotieuk5 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Oh my God - where to start?? Quite possibly the worst horror film I've ever seen.

The set up had potential - however the makers of this drivel seem to have tried to select bits and pieces from other superior films.

So what makes it soooooo bad. - well here goes; the acting is terrible, the effects are shoddy, the script is corny , the direction is so poor that you wonder whether it is actually a joke.

Please don't be fooled by all the high ratings that this drivel is getting. Its not even one of the "its so bad thats its good" brigade.

to be avoided at all costs!! You have been warned.

Wonderfully silly HORROR film
sepdr1 September 2009
I almost spit-out my popcorn. It began with a very loose and care-free feel to it, then suddenly, the convenient store clerk and other people in the started acting morose and dreadful. The little girl sitting outside of the store was so cute, but monotone. I'm guessing she was the executive producers daughter or family friend. the other actors were entertaining and believable. the story overall was fun and scary.

If you want to have good entertaining fun, rent this funny- scary movie. This movie actually reminds me of a parody of scary movie.

The one thing I think you will enjoy is that the young ladies are all cute and sexy and pretty good actresses.

It seems, people either love it or hate it.
junepr-38 June 2007
My roommate and I watched Bloodranch a few nights ago and we kind of enjoyed it. It wasn't great but it wasn't gruesome either. Both of us like to watch horror films when they're not to realistically violent like the 'Hostel' movies. Those are so realistic it's sickening. This movie was actually pretty funny. Fairly predictable and somewhat scary, in a silly kind of way.

The fake head that the leader of the Bloodranch guys picked up off of the food tray had us rolling on the ground. The acting was somewhat good or else all of those actors in the movie are really weird people. We're guessing, it might be a little of both.

Cyndi says she would give it a 9, but I'm sticking with a 7, because the movie was more funny to me than scary.

Is this movie for real?
rommelbak17 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Imagine a chopped off head resting on a dinner plate. A real head obviously, because the eyes keep blinking, no effort made on a special effects prop, except the piece of crap swinging in the hands of the eh... killer and shown only from behind, showing loosened up fake hair. Imagine you sitting there watching a heavily breathing scared victim who you know is acting like a heavily breathing scared victim. Imagine a shot of a van taking a wild left turn and seeing the exact same move a view minutes later. Are you mocking with me? Is this supposed to be funny? I'm 36 years old, have seen lot's of movies, this one must be the worst I've ever seen and ever will. That's for sure. And that's the only reason to watch this flick, and I guess the producers hope that's going to happen. I gave it a 2 out of 10 just for the effort and giving me a reason and the urge to comment.

We lol so hard...
augdr-12 August 2009
I have to rate this horror movie a big fat 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like we were roaming around Hollywood video and couldn't agree on watching anything. Then my sister says lets get something freaky- scary, and I said okay, but it has to be REALLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY scary!!!!!!! And you cant tell mom and dad, who was on a date. Like, all we could tell was that this big guy on the cover was really mean and evil looking right. So we get home get into our jams, and micro some pcorn. We stick the DVD in the player and from the get go were seeing places we used to go camping with my mom and dad and brother, (before he went off to Iraq to get rid of terrorists), and were seeing the high dessert where we used go horseback riding. It's a beautiful place even though they made it look so scary and alone. so we watched it and we loved it. a couple of the boys were cute. 10, 10, 10, 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROB ZOMBIE COPYCAT
nogodnomasters14 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film was similar to "House of 1,000 Corpses". It is a combination of "Texas Chainsaw..." and "Blood Sucking Freaks". The movie has gore and is pornographic without nudity and includes one rape.

The bad guys are well played and colorful, about as much as one can expect from a movie named "Blood Ranch." If you are a Rob Zombie fan, and enjoy mixing gore with philosophy check this one out.

Horrible
mugen8415 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was horrible! The acting was appalling by the victims and the crazy killers equally. The sound effects were awful too, when someone would get hit it sounded like someone thumping on an empty plastic yogurt container.

There were inconsistencies all through the movie, like the supposedly dead people breathing. When someone was supposed to be stabbed or hurt they would make the scene all confusing like they couldn't afford to pay for the effects to be shown on camera.

Most of the females would act either way too brave or way too frightened and could change from one to the other at any given moment. And how the victims would get themselves caught looked way to set up and had no originality at all. The whole movie was just a bunch of stuff already used and reused a ton of times by horror movies that I'm discombobulated as to why a company would have financed a movie like this in the first place.

Do not be fooled!
sidjf11 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Do not be fooled by the votes and comments on this movie. It is an attempt by the movie makers and friends to get you to see the movie. I was tricked and wasted time and money on this terrible, terrible movie. :-( This movie isn't even "good" bad. It's just bad.

I really hate to be this negative about a movie, but with all the fake reviews, people deserve to hear the truth. This movie sucks on every level. Bad acting, bad editing, bad sound, and terrible writing.

The story has been told a million times (and much better by others, might I add). This movie is not reminiscent of TCM, House of 1000 Corpese, or The Hills have Eyes. It is just low budget, predictable, junk. Much better could have been done with the budget.

Tough time deciding on a vote
solomonmethod4 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
**** Possible Spoiler Within ****

I had a tough time voting on this one. I mean it had obvious elements from "House of 1000 Corpses", "Wolf Creek", and "The Hills Have Eyes". It was these parts that contained the real horror elements that were done well, and for those who appreciate these movies, well I'm sure you'll get yer kicks here too.

The psychotic lack of empathy and the feeble attempt at a 'Charles Manson' type of philosophy are present here, as is the degrading circus freak show and the sickening gore fest. All this stuff doesn't really phase me anymore, but the rape scene was just totally unnecessary. I had to doc marks for that. Every time I watch these things I have to wonder if I've lost something of worth within my own self.

The acting is horrible, I'll leave it at that. If you want to watch something that's far more gripping and has much more substance. I would suggest 'Oz' or 'Panic Room'.

Derivative, loathsome and amateurish filth
Coventry8 March 2016
I have no idea how an awful movie like "Blood Ranch" ended up in my collection, in fact… It's the kind of imbecilic and terrible amateurish nonsense that I don't want to waste time and money on, because you just know in advance that it's made by over-enthusiast but totally untalented people. These people, like director Corbin Timbrook, desperately want to imitate their favorite role-model director, like Rob Zombie or Eli Roth, but they simply don't have the required budget or inspiration to deliver a half-decent film. The picture stills on the back of the DVD-cover promise extreme bloodshed, mayhem and half- naked luscious girls, but all it delivers is sheer boredom and pitiable attempts at black comedy. A quintet of uninteresting young people – two couples and a random hitch-hiker – is on their way to the Burning Man music festival, but naturally they have to take a detour due to road works and quickly run into trouble. They pick up a petrified wounded girl that is on the run for a vicious black van, and so they also become the prey of a family of disturbed retards. The screenplay and especially the dialogs appear to be written by a collective of kindergarten students and there isn't even that much violence or brutality on screen. The hand-held camera-work is insufferable, but not as much as the acting performances.

what junk
mrush19 October 2011
Yet another DVD box that promised all sorts of depravity and ended up not even showing a breast.

More silly kids end up out in the desert. They stumble into this compound of a bunch of sheds and huts wherein roam several mental defectives who are led by a guy called Spider. While all kinds of brutality and mayhem is promised on the box, other than a woman getting her arm hacked off not much depravity is shown.

Special effects are minimal. The acting is horrible. The script is worse. More homemade crap from Xenon.Anyone with a video camera and some red colored corn syrup could make something like this. That doesn't mean they should.

My old college boyfriend's in this movie
augdr-1518 August 2009
I have several daughters that are in high school now (a Senior and two Sophmores, twins).

They had a PJ Party and approximately, about a dozen girlfriends came for the weekend, so as to celebrate my daughters birthdays, just prior to school beginning. A pseudo "Last Hurrah," prior to the grind. They came home with 6 horror films from Blockbuster and began watching them. Well, on Saturday morning as I was cleaning house, I hear this familiar tone of voice and laughter coming from the stereo speakers.

As I entered the den, I looked at the screen and immediately began laughing hysterically. My eldest paused the movie and questioned my surprise outburst. I responded, that's Jimmy Fitzpatrick, one of my college boyfriends, when I attended Illinois State in the 70's.

It wasn't a great movie, but it was fun to watch Jimmy play such a crazy character. Congratulations Jimmy, you have a dozen new-young fans...and one older one obviously. Jimmy was a very nice boy back then, and a very passionate kisser.

Z Grade Acting
kimdeas-228 August 2009
Don't waste your time on this filth. I read the reviews and thought cool I'll watch it, give me back 20 minutes of my life as that all it took before I turned it off feeling nauseated. The actors had to have earnt $5 each for this utter crapocity. Looked like it was made in the 70's. Has to be the worst movie Michael Madsen has ever starred in & that's saying something Madsen fans. I'm sure the reviewers were part of the atrocious desperate cast. The gore was just laughable, the acting - my gosh - don't even go there, the background, stupid costumes, stupid inbreed freaks that were in this movie were not scary, not funny, just NOT!

We loved this freaky flick on 06/6/6
hallowpr17 June 2006
I attend University in Windsor. One of our many fun activities we participate together in on our floor, in the females dorms, is to watch horror flicks together in our jammies.

There is about 35 to 40 of us that attend each movie night and this one was extra special. We had a dress-up night for the flick, so everyone wore sexy nighties and jams. Yet, what was the most fun thing we did to the ladies was, a friend of mine watched the flick prior to the show, then dressed up like the man with gray hair and red leopard print jams, and jumped out yelling and screaming with an aluminum machete'. The looks on the ladies faces were incredibly priceless. They were yelling and screaming as though they were six years old. Sincere thanks to the writer, director and actors. We thoroughly enjoyed this crazy flick.

Horrendously bad movie
bd-west8121 March 2009
I have to say first that I love movies. I have so much respect for actors, writers, directors, producers. I look for movies that are much more than just mindless entertainment. I look for the movies that usually fly under the radar, cause you can usually find some of the best films ever made there. Indie films and such. It was the case with this movie "Blood Ranch", I had never heard of it. And I wish that was still the case! Words cannot even begin to describe just how completely awful this movie was. When I first started watching it I thought it was a joke, maybe some kind of satire on horror films or something. I could not tell you what happens, how it begins or ends. I would watch for about 15 minutes or so then skip forward a few scenes to see if maybe it got any better. But it only got worse. It is as if a bunch of fifth graders, with absolutely no talent or ability, deliberately found the worst actors then could get, and then decided to wing it without a script. I have seen so many movies, I love movies. But I have to say that this is without a doubt the absolute worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life If you have not seen this movie, Please do yourself a favor and keep it that way

Shoot me now
aqos-12 November 2009
Please, shoot me before I get roped in to watching another movie as bad as this. I thought that with all of the 10 ratings that it would get good at some point. I was wrong. "Spider" with his Dollar store clearance wig throughout, a transgender little person, a human dart board. I know you're wondering how a movie can miss with these elements. The plot was nonexistent, the southern accents were annoying and the premise that there are a bunch of degenerate guys just waiting for someone to stumble onto their little patch of land just don't make for a movie worth watching. I have to give them credit for not showing a bunch of gratuitous naked females. I just don't know why perfectly good actors would think that this was a movie worth making unless they were just trying to see how many people could be punked into watching it. It was a complete waste of time.

So Kirasawa Fans May Be Disappointed
tbranson-227 August 2009
Look, the movies called "BLOOD RANCH" not "Orchids for Chocolate" or some such so don't go into to it with grand expectations and you'll be OK. While being fairly transgressive, the film never falls too deeply into torture porn territory and is campy enough for a few laughs.

Season Hamilton is pretty easy on the eyes as the "Good Girl" and I was relieved we didn't have to see her abused in any sub-human way (although the same can't be said for everyone in this flick). I would have liked to see her running around topless maybe, but alas, that was not to be. In fact the complete lack of nudity was a little disappointing, but oh well.

My one complaint was the depiction of rural Americans. In too many movies anyone who lives more than fifteen minutes from a 7-eleven is portrayed as a wild-eyed sex murderer- My experience as a rural American is quite the contrary- I lived the first half of my life as a child in the Mohave- the son of the leader of a cargo cult that worshiped an eight-ball shifter knob and a pair of old fuzzy dice and not once can I remember a single member of our "Family" kidnapping, torturing or raping anyone- let alone a car load of hip young people lost in the desert- although at times I can't say we weren't tempted.

I agree with Seattle and the Canada girls
johnnygor4 July 2006
If you are looking to watch a film that is trying to fill you up with wonder and answers to life you are looking to the wrong movie. This movie is all about having fun with the make of movies. Horror movies are nothing like real life, hello, and it's all about to scream and close your eyes when the scary things are to happen. Please do not be so serious with you critics. It is so silly to be critical of a movie with this title. Come on guys, be truthful you were not looking for an academy award winner called blood ranch right. So take a look in the mirror and say to your self I must not take my self so seriously. You will have a short life with that bad attitude. Enjoy life, laugh at your self and others. You will have much more fun. I promise. Good job to the director of blood ranch. Good job. I enjoy it.

It was a shock for all of us
mitchkase14 June 2006
It is not often that we are able to see new movies when they are new to the market. I see this world wide premiere sticker so I buy the movie. We scream so much I lose my voice. I have never see a scary movie before and we really like to watch this one. Many of the actors are familiar to us like the big guy boss with the Gray hair that was called the spider. It was funny at many times like when the midget make funny story of the little girl to spider. Was that a boy or a girl? I don't know when they will make a second copy to this movie but I would like to know. My girl have a nightmare the night we watch it, but it was good to protect her the rest of the night. You know what I am saying. We give the movie a big 10. It is great fun.
