The Human Centipede: "Two things struck me about The Human Centipede, besides the sheer fucking insanity of the concept. The first was how it... wasn't as bad as I'd expected it to be. Not that it was a pleasant experience, mind you. It's still pretty goddamn gruesome, particularly the first time Katsuro has to go number 2. That's... not a good scene. One of those things that you really wish you could un-see. Nor is it exactly happy fun time when Jenny (Yennie), the unfortunate end-segment, starts developing pus-filled infections around her mouth staples. Ok, so maybe it's pretty bad. But not unwatchably so (depending on your stomach, I suppose). The surgery itself isn't shown, and Six pulls his punches just enough to make it awful and disgusting without crossing the line into Hostel territory. The thing that makes it so fundamentally and outright horrific is really the concept itself,...

It's Memorial Day, and I suppose everyone is outdoors today, grilling or having picnics and/or dealing with relatives. But for those of you sitting at home, eager for Austin film news (I have no idea who this would be, besides myself), here are a few updates.
For some reason, Willie Nelson was all over the news last week. He cut off his signature pigtails, which led a lot of people to quail in fear as though he were Samson. The Austin City Council voted to rename part of Second Street after the musician. And there's some movie-related news: Nelson's currently producing the feature The Dry Gulch Kid, scheduled to shoot somewhere in Texas this summer, and casting is in progress. Johnny Knoxville will star, but the news that got media outlets astir was that Lindsay Lohan is in talks to appear in the film. Lohan was in town last year for the Machete shoot.

MoviesOnline sat down recently with Blake Lively to talk about her role in “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee,” directed by Rebecca Miller. Adapted from writer-director Rebecca Miller’s novel of the same name, the film follows the adventures of Pippa Lee, a serene, beautiful, devoted wife and mother with a seemingly perfect life -- until her surprisingly volatile past crashes through her persona, forcing her to find her true sense of self. She begins to question the seemingly fulfilling life she’s made for herself by entering into a dialogue with the demons of her past.
With a film spanning a single character’s lifetime, Rebecca Miller planned from the onset for a second performer to portray the teenage Pippa Lee. What remained unclear was who was best suited for the part. Working with casting director Cindy Tolan, they considered nearly one hundred actors for the role before setting their sights on rising star,...

This week The Cold Case remembers Elvis & Anabelle, the 2007 indie that links Gossip Girl, the Weinsteins and Edgar Allen Poe.
If Prince Charming brought Sleeping Beauty back from her deathly slumber in the media-saturated 21st century, then he'd be plastered across the tabloids as a necrophiliac perv while she'd be hounded by Oprah for a tell-all interview. And that's precisely what happens in 2007's Elvis & Anabelle, a dark and dreamy slice of Southern gothic romance that's not too far removed from our previous Cold Case, Lawn Dogs.
Playing like a cross between Six Feet Under and Sixteen Candles, writer-director Will Geiger's indie pairs Max Minghella's mortician Elvis with Blake Lively's bulimic beauty queen Anabelle. When she snuffs it at the very moment she's crowned Miss Texas Rose, her body winds up on the slab of his family's funeral home, which he's had to run singlehandedly since his...
