HBO Max has a lot to offer in August, with titles to look forward to including the premiere of a brand new Seth Rogen movie called “An American Pickle” on Aug. 6, and Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film “The Dark Knight” out Aug. 1.
The nascent streaming service also shares content with HBO, with new films coming like “Jojo Rabbit” out Aug. 1, “Birds of Prey” out Aug. 15, “Richard Jewell” out Aug. 8, and “Queen & Slim,” out Aug. 22. The upcoming series “Lovecraft County,” which mixes fact and fantasy and takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, arrives Aug. 16.
Leaving throughout the month include, tragically, all eight “Harry Potter” films, which will be gone after Aug. 25. Other absolute classics like “Good Will Hunting,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and both “Kill Bill” movies will be gone after Aug. 31, so watch them while you can.

HBO Max is continuing to pull from Warner Bros.’ incredible back catalogue of movies, with August bringing a huge number of new titles to the streaming service. With over 130 new pieces of content, the list of upcoming arrivals encompasses classic films of all kinds, from Oscar winners to comedies, horrors to family pics and, of course, tons of blockbusters.
A highlight for many users will probably be the glut of Batman films coming to HBO Max at the start of the month. Every cinematic outing for the Caped Crusader from 1989’s Batman starring Michael Keaton to 2008’s The Dark Knight with Christian Bale (which just celebrated its 12th anniversary this weekend) are going up on the site. Sticking in Gotham, both seasons of Harley Quinn are also coming to HBO Max, following their original release on DC Universe.

It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.
Of course, HBO Max is designed to house much of WarnerMedia’s content across many mediums. That means some recent movies on note like Jojo Rabbit (Aug. 1), Richard Jewell (Aug. 8), and Birds of Prey (Aug.

Justin Chadwick has shown a love of delving into history to tell riveting true tales in his past films, The Other Boleyn Girl, The First Grader and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. All three of those efforts were excellent, which makes us excited that he’s going back in time to the 17th century for his next movie, titled Tulip Fever. Now, we have even more reason to be excited about the project, with news that Skyfall actress Judi Dench and Glee star Matthew Morrison have signed on for supporting roles, along with model Cara Delevingne and Cressida Bonas.
The actors join an already promising cast which includes Alicia Vikander, Dane DeHaan, Jack O’Connell, Holliday Grainger, Christoph Waltz and Zach Galifianakis. Set in 17th century Amsterdam, Tulip Fever tells the story of a married woman (Vikander) who, upon falling for the man (DeHaan) contracted to paint her portrait, begins a passionate affair with him.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is the long-gestating feature project about the famous South African leader Nelson Mandela and his wife, Winnie, each who played significant roles in their country’s revolution against apartheid. Boasting the biggest budget for a film to come from South Africa, the film (as directed by Justin Chadwick), features spirited embodiments from Idris Elba and Naomie Harris (playing Nelson and Winnie, respectively) in its life-encompassing presentation of their heroic efforts.
Chadwick previously directed the Eric Bana, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman drama The Other Bolelyn Girl, along with the 2010 drama The first Grader (set in Kenya).
I sat down with Chadwick in an exclusive interview to discuss the film, its strength in extras, his disinterest in making the film “spinach,” and more.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom opened in Chicago on December 25.

Chicago – When South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela died on December 5th, there was a sense in the media that yes, he was a “great man,” but how he affected social change seemed lost in platitudes. Director Justin Chadwick fills in those gaps in his film adaptation of “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”
Chadwick, and Mandela’s daughters, were at the London premiere of the film when they got the word that the great man had passed. There was speculation with the production company and distributor that the film release might be rescheduled. As Chadwick describes below, it was the children of Nelson Mandela that insisted that the film debut should go on, because of the stellar portrayal of Mandela – by actor Idris Elba – and the precise storytelling of his life by Justin Chadwick.

A former actor who has cut his teeth on high-end U.K. television shows such as Bleak House, starring Gillian Anderson and Carey Mulligan and highly-acclaimed spy thriller Spooks, Justin Chadwick made his feature debut in 2008 with The Other Boleyn Girl, a costume drama boasting Natalie Portman, Eric Bana and Scarlett Johansson among its stars. Naomie Harris became a global star as the Bond girl in Skyfall, but her biggest challenge yet has been playing the controversial figure of Nelson Mandela's wife in the new biopic. Luckily, she says, her co-star was Idris Elba…
The first time I met Naomie Harris was in 2010 in a noisy cafe in Portobello Road, London. I thought then that she was the sort of girl you would have wanted to make your best friend if you had met her at school: warm, talkative, not at all puffed up and not dressed up either. I don't remember what she wore but it wasn't aiming to be memorable. The cafe was noisy so she suggested we talk in her nearby flat. She was best known then for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean and for television dramas (Clara in White Teeth, Hortense in Small Island). She was about to pull into the fast lane,...

South African producer Anant Singh's 20-year struggle to realize "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" has been compared with Richard Attenborough's lengthy quest to make "Gandhi." Their biographies are similar: Both chart the revolutionary course of an iconic political figure after being schooled as a lawyer, only to campaign for freedom against a "colonial" government, with a message of peaceful political reform. Singh has produced several anti-Apartheid films over the last 30 years, including "Place of Weeping," "Sarafina!" and "Cry, The Beloved Country." Nelson Mandela himself called him "a producer I respect very much…a man of tremendous ability" when he granted him the film rights to his autobiography, "Long Walk to Freedom." Together with "Sarafina!" screenwriter William Nicholson, best known for "Gladiator," and "The First Grader" director Justin Chadwick, Singh has willed a grand and sprawling adaptation of "Long Walk to Freedom" to life. Every Labor Day weekend, cinephiles journey out to a small town nestled in a remote corner of southwest Colorado’s San Juan mountain range for the Telluride Film Festival. Production staff are hard at work building state-of-the-art theaters for more than a month before the event and readying for a sudden influx of dedicated filmgoers. Veteran pass holders, staff, and volunteers make the trip largely out of faith in the festival’s superb programming that’s famously kept completely secret up until the day before it begins. The shroud of mystery, the breathtaking scenery of a box canyon and the fact that there are no press lines, competitions, or paparazzi lend a sanctified awe to this complete cinematic immersion. Venturing deep into uncharted storytelling territory with old or new friends make the cost of getting out here and the intensive labor involved with putting it all together worth it each and every time.

Inspiring and heart-warming are words that will easily be pegged to the description of The First Grader. The story of an 84 year old Kenyan man enrolling in primary school is, after all, the sort of feel-good thing you expect to hear after all the bad news has been dispensed with, the sort of story that puts a smile on your face and helps you forget about all that terribly depressing stuff until the next news bulletin. The first trailer for Justin Chadwick's "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" has landed, starring Idris Elba in the title role as the former South African president and anti-apartheid revolutionary. Naomie Harris ("Skyfall") also stars as Mandela's wife of 39 years, Winnie. The Weinstein Company snapped up the title back in February. An Oscar-friendly release date is set for November 29. The film is based on Mandela's autobiography of the same title, adapted by Oscar-nominated scribe William Nicholson ("Les Miserables," "Gladiator"). Director Chadwick has previously helmed "The First Grader" and "The Other Boleyn Girl." Meanwhile, a rival biopic is also set to hit theaters this fall: "Winnie Mandela," starring Jennifer Hudson in the title role, with Terrence Howard playing Nelson Mandela.

"Shall we begin?" asks Idris Elba in the South African accented voice of Nelson Mandela.
The handsome British actor is front and centre in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which follows Mandela as a younger man when he was, as the first full trailer tells us, public enemy #1 and feared by the government leading up to his arrest and imprisonment as he fought for freedom, racial equality and human rights for South Africans of colour.
The biopic is directed by Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl, The First Grader) and co-stars Naomie Harris (Skyfall) as Mandela's second wife Winnie Mandela, a social worker and political activist in her own right who tells Nelson: "I heard you had a lot of girlfriends. I'm different."

Listen, we know you have to sell this intense drama about the struggle to end apartheid to a mass audience. But can we call a moratorium on using "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan for...well, anything...for about a decade? The official song for the 2010 World Cup (yes, which was held in South Africa, hence relevance) has been played to death and lost any innocence and impact it had. At least for now. Okay, with that off our chest, here's the new trailer for "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom." As you know, Idris Elba goes from the fake apocalypse of "Pacific Rim" to the very real story of the freedom fighter who fought an entire system and way of thinking to bring justice to his land and people. It really is a remarkable tale, but this first trailer makes it look like Biopic 101, with Justin Chadwick ("The First Grader," "The Other Boleyn Girl...

Coming on the heels of the 94 year-old apartheid leader’s hospitalization earlier this month, the teaser trailer for “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom” is short on content but big on emotion and respect for the man’s ideals.
There’s only one scene of actual footage, literally evoking the film’s metaphorical title with a long-shot of elderly Mandela walking along a sun-set field with children flagging behind him. What tugs the heart-strings is the stirring narration by actor Idris Elba, who portrays the former South African president, giving voice to Mandela’s ethos: “People learn to hate; they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart.”
For Elba, who’s got Pacific Rim opening now and the small-screen Luther returning for its third season, playing Mandela represents a well-deserved prominence that will likely garner awards season buzz. It will be interesting to see...

Starting today in theaters worldwide you can see Idris Elba fight off alien monsters in "Pacific Rim." While that film is unlikely to snag him any awards come Fall, his next project, the Nelson Mandela biopic "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," is -- should it go over well. Based on Mandela's autobiography of the same name and directed by Justin Chadwick ("The First Grader"), the drama stars Elba as the titular political activist and Bond's new Moneypenny, Naomie Harris, as his ex-wife Winnie Mandela. From the looks of the just-released teaser, the British Elba has nailed down the tricky South Africa accent. How his performance stacks up is still in question. Thoughts? The Weinstein Company opens "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" November 29th. http://movies.uk.msn.com/trailers-and-clips?videoid=7f8fb7ed-739c-41f8-abb6-c05205ca9ec7&src=v5:..">http://movies.uk.msn.com/trailers-and-clips?videoid...

The Oscars are in just over for 48 hours, but man, they feel so yesterday already, amirite? So let's start looking ahead to next year, and one can't ignore the news and start speculating when someone like Harvey Weinstein snaps up a movie about Nelson Mandela. The Weinstein Company has picked up the rights to "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom," the biopic with none other than the eternally awesome Idris Elba in the lead role. Justin Chadwick ("The First Grader") directs with Naomie Harris co-starring as Winnie, with the film said by Elba last year to cover Mandela's "early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison…" It's a powerful story indeed, though previous attempts to chronicle the South African leader's life (or parts of it) haven't had quite the lasting impact. Actors ranging from Danny Glover ("Mandela"), Dennis Haysbert ("Goodbye Bafana") and Terrence Howard...

Political activist and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela has been portrayed a handful of times in cinema over the past few decades, most notably by Sidney Poitier, Dennis Haysbert, and the ever-serene Morgan Freeman. Next to take that mantle is British actor Idris Elba, who will hopefully bring to the role the simmering strength of his Stringer Bell character from HBO.s The Wire. But Elba won.t have to worry about slinging the film on urban street corners, as Deadline reports the Weinstein Co. has acquired the rights to the adaptation of Mandela.s autobiography Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The film is directed by Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl, The First Grader) from a script written by Academy Award nominee William Nicholson (Les Miserables, Gladiator). The First Grader, a Kenyan film we covered quite extensively on this site, from its theatrical release to DVD (it received a limited theatrical run in the USA last year via National Geographic, grossing a healthy $332,000), is now available on VOD, as I just learned. So you can watch it right now, if you have a Netflix account, because it's streaming there. Yay! The film was directed by Justin Chadwick, with Naomie Harris and Oliver Litondo in starring roles. Set in Kenya, the film (based on a true story) centers on an old villager (played by Litondo), who insists on attending school so he can learn to read, inspiring others around him to realize that it's never too...

Curtis will direct the drama “The Golden Lady,” which tells the real-life story of how Maria Altmann and a young lawyer fought to reclaim several Klimt paintings stolen by the Nazis, including a famous portrait of Altmann’s aunt. Playwright Alexi Kaye Campbell wrote the screenplay, and Origin Pictures’ David M. Thompson (“The First Grader”) is producing. Ronan is attached to star in the World War I drama “Testament of Youth,” which “Calendar Girls” co-writer Juliette Towhidi adapted from the 1933 Vera Brittain memoir about how the war affected the women of the U.K. and her years as a nurse and journalist. “Harry Potter” producer David Heyman of Heyday Films is producing. Three powerful UK film scores get a nod from the Ivor Novellos, while Hitchcock's restored silent movies are given modern musical accompaniment
Play on
Why are the pop-based Ivor Novello awards nominating far more interesting film scores than any other awards body? Their three contenders for best original film score, announced last week, were: The First Grader, by Alex Heffes; We Need to Talk About Kevin, by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood; and Life in a Day, by Harry Gregson-Williams and the great Matthew Herbert. These are inventive, creative and powerful modern film scores – far more vital, exciting and reflective of what's going on in film score composition in the UK at the moment than the usual boring nods for, say, Howard Shore and Alexandre Desplat.

A movie adaptation of Nelson Mandela's autobiography A Long Walk to Freedom, which focuses on his early life and 27 years in prison, has been in the works so long that Morgan Freeman.now 74.was once attached to play Mandela in his prime. However, ascending leading man Idris Elba recently revealed he is set to portray the anti-apartheid activist in the drama, slated to shoot this May in South Africa. And now, Screen Daily reveals that Naomie Harris and Justin Chadwick have entered negotiations to play Winnie Mandela and direct, respectively. Should they both sign on, this would be the second time Harris and Chadwick collaborated, as he helmed the 2010 Kenyan drama, The First Grader, in which she starred as a devoted educator. Naomie Harris is busy playing the spy game as part of the Skyfall cast, and now it looks like she’ll be taking on a real-life figure, entering talks to play Winnie Mandela in Long Walk To Freedom. If she does sign a deal, she’ll likely be playing opposite Idris Elba as iconic prisoner-turned-world figure Nelson Mandela in the biopic, which will cover a large span of his life.Gladiator’s William Nicholson has written the script for the film, which will shoot across South Africa, including scenes on Robben Island, where Mandela spent nearly 20 of his 27 years in prison.Screen Daily also reports that The Other Boleyn Girl’s Justin Chadwick – who worked with Harris on 2010’s true-life tale The First Grader – is in talks to direct the movie. He’s not the first person who has been attached: the likes of Shekhar Kapur and Tom Hooper have both flirted with the idea,...

A film adaptation of "Long Walk To Freedom," Nelson Mandela's memoir of his time in prison under South African apartheid, his subsequent release, and rise to the presidency, has been, ironically, a long time coming. Back in the 1990s, "Elizabeth" director Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct a version starring Morgan Freeman as Mandela, but the project never came together, and Freeman would later take on the role in Clint Eastwood's "Invictus." More recently, Tom Hooper flirted with the project before "The King's Speech" got underway and sent him into the stratosphere, but again, the stars never aligned properly.
But of late, there's suddenly been a rush of activity, and it looks like the film might finally reach screens. A few weeks ago, the surprising choice of "The Wire" star Idris Elba was announced to play Mandela, and now it seems that he's got a director and a co-star,...
