The Fantastic Mr. Frump...or about that time when a common man got the powers that the villain was pursuing to conquer the Universe... Warning: Spoilers
The Fantastic Mr. Frump...or about that time when a common man got the powers that the villain was pursuing to conquer the Universe... (don´t worry, this is FRUMP, with an F)

------- ------- -------

Being Marvel´s most iconic character, Spider-Man gets to fight both against his own villains and the most important villains of other heroes, like in this case, where he and his amazing friends battle Dr. Doom, a villain that fights against the Fantastic Four most of the time. It is interesting to say, by the way, that the Fantastic Mr. Frump that appears in this episode has the same initials than the Fantastic Four: FF.

Mr. Frump is a good man that like many others, doesn´t always have a job and it is safe to assume that he considers himself an average unhappy man or something similar and he says that the only person that has ever been kind with him is May Parker, Peter´s (and therefore Spider-man´s) aunt.

In this episode we see Spider-Man interrupting the bazillionth attempt of Dr. Doom to take over the Universe while he was racing against his friends Iceman and Firestar in their way back home. As a result, Mr. Frump gets the unlimited powers that Dr. Doom was trying to get with the help of a magic amulet and begins asking for small things like a hot-dog with mustard and all the condiments to eat and beautiful sunny skies for everyone to enjoy. Sadly, when he asks to know how he got all those powers, the amulet makes Dr. Doom appear and even when he does reveal more or less how he got his powers, he cheats Mr. Frump into trying to destroy the Spider-friends. and we have an adventure both comical and philosophical and as you can guess, at the end , the power of the amulet did not stay either with Mr. Frump or with Dr. Doom and everything came back as it was before. Doom says that in moments they will not remember any detail about the adventure and leaves, not without saying beforehand all the kind of things a villain must say before leaving. Nevertheless, during the adventure, Mr. Frump had asked for someone special to be his friend forever and ever with a gray furry cat appearing as a result. This cat re-appears while both Mr. Frump and the Spider-friends are beginning to forget everything. Mr. Frump names her MABEL, as he had named her before they were beginning to lose memory about the adventure... and we all hope that Mr. Frump and his cat MABEL lived happily ever after. At the final seconds Spider-Man says:

"---you know? I can´t believe that in a few moments, we are actually going to forget something as fantastic as this!!!----

Iceman replies: --- "Forget what?"

Spider-man shrugs...(as he had already forgotten).

Final Note: there is a point in the plot where Mr. Frump confers himself superpowers in order to save aunt May, after which she doesn´t see Frump as a good person anymore. It could be due to the fact of him attacking the Spider-friends before that, but it is much more coherent with the story that she began disliking him when he conferred powers to himself and dressed like a superhero, as aunt May hates them, as any fan of Spider-man knows.

:)

Thanks for reading.

Warning: Spoilers
Mr. Frump, voiced by Alan Young of Mr. Ed fame, is a little old loser who finds an enchanted amulet from Doctor Doom and uses it to make himself supreme ruler, but in the end, he's still the man he was.

Mr. Frump felt the kindly May Parker was nice to him and this is how she gets caught up in the series of events.

When she protests Mr. Frump's treatment of the heroes during a battle with an alien creature in a coliseum, Doom throws her to the monster as well.

Doom has succeeded in tricking Frump into believing Spiderman and his Amazing Friends are actually Frump's enemies, but once Frump sees May endangered, he realizes Doom is lying to him.

The strange thing about this very episode is I had to watch it to get my disapproval of the recent Pompeii movie out of my mind.
