Larry Runs Away.....To Beaver's Bathtub!
ccthemovieman-115 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
"Larry Mondello" (Rusty Stevens) is always getting into trouble or getting Beaver into trouble. This time he gets caught showing Beaver his sister's diary and then later in the day runs away from home after his mother catches him and yells at him in front of Beaver.

A few hours later, Larry calls up Beaver and tells him he's going to run away to Mexico but winds up in Beaver's tub, instead! ha ha. When asked, he answers, "your place wasn't as far away." Beaver, with the aid of reluctant Wally, try to hide him because they don't want to be "rats."

The trouble starts (for the boys) when, with Mrs. Mondello over at the house, Larry is discovered. Larry's mother, by the way, is even more nuts than Larry. Madge Blake also did a great job playing her. It's odd, but throughout the episode Mrs. Mondello called Ward "Mr. Cleaver" and June "Mrs. Cleaver." Mothers and fathers did not call their sons friends by the last names - I know because I lived in that era. Oh, well...that's TV, not real life.

Overall, this is another funny episode with moral lessons to be learned. I almost feel sorry for Larry, because his mother is a little whacked and his father - whom we never see - is always out of town. In this episode, he was in Cincinnati.

Liar, liar, Beaver's pants should be on fire or at least his conscience.
pensman18 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Larry and Beaver are in Larry's sister's room. Beaver wonders if they should be in there, Larry says it's OK because his sister is out. Beaver is amazed at all the stuff Larry's sister has to make her look good; but Beaver feels it's best to leave. Larry stops Beaver because Larry wants to read from his sister's diary. Larry describes a diary as a place where girls write mushy stuff they don't want anyone to see. Obviously Larry grasps the purpose but doesn't see it as a hindrance to invade her privacy. Beaver repeats they shouldn't be reading this. Apparently, Mrs. Mondello grasps the idea and when she finds Larry she sends Beaver home and threatens Larry with "Wait until your father gets home." Beaver come homes early. Wally is going out with Eddie, and Ward and June are going shopping for a few hours so Beaver will be home alone. Beaver gets a call from Larry who claims he is running away to Mexico.

After returning from shopping, Ward gets a call from Mrs. Mondello who claims Larry has disappeared. Larry was to stay in his room until Mrs. Mondello said he could leave, and when she went in to tell him, he was gone. Larry's sister is out looking for him because Larry took his suitcase with him. Ward and June want to know if Beaver has seen Larry anyplace or around the house or outside. Beaver, as usual, plays his "take his dad's words literally" so Beaver can basically lie.

Beaver asks if he can eat in his room and pretend he's in a hotel getting room service. When Wally goes upstairs he finds Larry in the bathtub in their room. Larry wants to know if Wally is going to squeal on him, and if he does squeal to wait until Larry has had something to eat. Wally figures he could get in a lot of trouble if he doesn't report Larry. While having supper, June suggests Ward call Mrs. Mondello but Wally suggests Larry might not be home yet.

Up in the bathroom, Larry is eating but he is also complaining about June's cooking; Larry doesn't like the meatloaf or the carrots. Beaver says next time Larry should run away to someone else's house. Larry says he is going to sleep overnight but needs his pajamas which are outside in his suitcase. Larry figures they can tie a rope to his suitcase and haul it up and bring it in a window.

Mrs. Mondello arrives and she is very upset Larry hasn't returned yet. Mrs. Mondello is sure Larry would come to Beaver's house first. As Ward is assuring her that he told Beaver to tell him if he saw Larry, there is a banging outside. Ward opens the drapes to see a suitcase going upstairs. Ward figures he has found Larry.

Ward brings Beaver and Wally into the bathroom and threatens to turn the hot water on. That brings Larry out of hiding. Larry is sent downstairs and Beaver and Wally are to wait upstairs. Larry claims he ran away because his mother yelled at him in front of Beaver.

Wally and Beaver are sentenced to two days of weed pulling as a punishment. Beaver claims he can't understand why he is being punished just for hiding his best friend. Wally figures it would have been better to have told their father about Larry from the start, and no doubt Ward would have settled everything; and for sure they wouldn't be pulling weeds now.

Pulling weeds was a typical punishment when I was a kid. No one like it as you had to use a tool to dig down to the root and pull the weed out. A whipping would have been preferred. A couple of good swats and it was over. You cried for maybe 20 seconds and then sniffled for a while. But weed pulling was a full day punishment and you had to provide proof of your effort which meant a basket or two or three of weeds.

Beaver was definitely old enough to know what he was doing and that there would be a severe punishment when he was caught. Not an "if" but a when. Certainly kids would sympathize with Larry. If you got balled out at home that was bad enough, but no kid wanted to embarrassed in front of his friends. But Beaver has clearly lied to his father and knows it. He also knew he had no business in the room of Larry's sister. Worse, he got his brother to lie also. It's clear that Beaver should be feeling some shame for what he did. I am surprised at the writers.

Beaver's bathroom - a familiar hideout
AlsExGal11 May 2024
Larry Mondello has Beaver over to his house, and he gives Beaver a guided tour of his sister's room complete with a reading from her diary. But Mrs. Mondello catches Larry in the act and reads Larry the riot act in front of Beaver. As a result, Larry runs away from home. He calls Beaver and tells him he is running away to Mexico, but apparently there is some kind of compromise reached where Larry agrees to hide out in Beaver's bathroom.

Wally learns about this arrangement after the fact, and for some reason he decides to help Beaver hide Larry. This seems out of character for the usually level-headed Wally. In the meantime, Mrs. Mondello has phoned the Cleavers about the situation and told them to be on the lookout for Larry. How long can Larry successfully hideout in Beaver's bathroom? Beaver and Wally's alligator managed to hide there long enough to reach one foot in length. So I'd say watch and find out.

Poor Larry and his dysfunctional home. His father is only rarely - actually twice - spotted. The rest of the time he's elsewhere on business. And even with her son a runaway, Mrs. Mondello has time to complain about her daughter being unmarried, as though that is the cause of all of her problems, even with Larry. It can't be easy having her as a mom.

There's no Eddie Haskell sighting this week, but Wally does discuss him second hand as the planner of this Saturday's activities. He asks Wally to join him over at the high school gym to watch the girls try out for cheerleader because Eddie says that when the girls don't make the squad they will become hysterical and cry. Whether it is that Eddie enjoys watching people fail or he thinks he can swoop in and be a shoulder to cry on for some vulnerable girl is not stated. It would be typical Eddie for it to be the former, and it would be rather creepy for it to be the latter.

We did see Larry's father...once!
dktamosan7 February 2024
One of the running storylines about Larry's household is that his father is always out of town (usually in Cincinnati) Whenever Larry gets in trouble his mother laments "If only your father wasn't out of town." Consequently, it's assumed that that his father is unseen in any of the episodes featuring Larry. Well, he is seen; briefly, in the season 2 episode School Play. After the play, when the kids are being congratulated by the parents backstage, there he is! That episode also features an appearance of Judy's father. (Apparently home from Africa after shooting 50 elephants!) We never do see Larry's sister or brother though.

LARRY, THE THIRD CLEAVER SON???
tcchelsey17 January 2024
I think the third season episodes were a real turning point in the series, Wally and Beave were getting older (not necessarily wiser) and that opened the door to more experimentation for the writers. And they did a lot of experimenting, thanks to some dandy scripts.

Series director David Butler may have also had a hand in throwing some ideas to writers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, due to the fact that he had was connected to dozens of popular comedy films in his lengthy career, spanning back to silent films. This one centers around Larry and a little "disagreement" he has with his mother. He and Beave are caught reading his sister's secret diary and Mrs. Mondello chews him out BIG time. It's also a rare episode where Larry FINALLY takes a fall himself. Beave gets to go home scott free while Larry sits and stews and stews.

Not for long! Larry tells Beave he's running away to Mexico?... and Beave has no choice but to "rescue" him and let him bunk at the house --- in the bathroom? Fortunately, Wally is out (no witnesses!) and June and Ward are shopping, so Larry is able to make himself comfortable, though he's not too happy with the food. Also check out the funny dialogue. It's priceless.

Naturally, worried-sick Mrs. Mondello comes knocking at the door. The BEST scene of it all is Ward catching Larry's suitcase being hoisted upstairs. Not to be missed. Somehow, it's all just hilarious stuff, and again, not that far from the truth if you're going to sneak someone over. Possibly suggested by the old master, David Butler himself.

Rusty Stevens proves he's a good actor, though his career would be cut short due to his parent's interference with the producers, according to many stories through the years. That may also explain why we never saw his sister or father (played by other actors) as Connelly and Mosher were considering eventually writing him out of the series. Additionally, Madge Blake (Larry's mom) would leave the series before Rusty Stevens, which was not a good sign.

I do agree with the production notes; the bathroom toilet is never seen, only the sink and bathtub. The same would go for many other tv shows for years, including movies if you think about it. It would be another decade-- yes-- at least to hear the "sound" of a toilet flushing in the 70s on ALL IN THE FAMILY.

An amazing footnote. Great trivia question.

SEASON 3 EPISODE 15 remastered CBS/Universal dvd box set.

Caught In The Act
StrictlyConfidential21 March 2021
(*Ward quote*) - "I don't know. A broken window is always a household mystery."

Larry does something bad and his mother catches him and severely scolds him in front of Beaver.

When Larry decides to run away from home he ends up camping out in the bathtub of Beaver's bathroom.

Of course, concealing Larry turns out to be a difficult problem when Ward starts asking questions.
