Why not Sunday? Here's why....(sheesh...)
pmike-1131215 June 2022
A good episode about dealing with disappointments and teaching kids to understand and accept them .

To answer a previous (extremely short-sighted) review - Sunday was for families going to CHURCH (horrors!) and big Sunday dinners and visiting with family (grandparents, cousins, etc.) There was a different, great big, and often wonderful (though not perfect) world before the last couple of feeble little generations came along. Think about it.

If Saturday is a problem....
Sinemah_Freek7 June 2018
This is not so much a review, as it is simply an observation not only about this episode, but others that had a very similar dilemma. I really, really want to know, exactly, and precisely, why in the world that Ward Cleaver did not even think about taking Beaver Cleaver where he needed to go on that particular Saturday in question, and then have the oh-so-unique idea of taking Wally Cleaver where he needed to go, on, let's see, Sunday. Yes. Ward could have very easily taken Wally where he needed to go on, gasp, a Sunday !!! An idea whose time has come. Think about it.

No matter how you view it, Ward dodged a bullet named Eddie Haskell
pensman12 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Miss Landers is trying to announce there will be a fathers and students picnic this coming Saturday and not having a lot of success. At the Cleaver house, Ward and Wally are preparing to go fishing this Saturday after Ward has postponed it for the past three weeks. Wally is seemingly ruining it by announcing he is bringing Eddie along. Beaver goes rushing in looking for Ward to sign the permission slip. Ward is ready to sign when he realizes both events are Saturday.

Wally and Beaver are having dinner together as Ward and June are out for the evening. As both boys discuss Saturday, they realize one of them is going to be disappointed. The next morning as the boys are heading off to school, June says Ward hasn't signed the permission slip for Beaver as yet and he wants to talk to Wally at dinner. Wally figures as he's the oldest, dad is going with him. Beaver is crushed.

Everyone is turning in their slips except for Beaver. Beaver says his father has to go on a business trip to Washington. Miss Landers offers to let Beaver come alone but he declines. Ward has decided he has to take Beaver and Wally will have to wait. On the way home from school, Larry says Beaver's father better not show up or everyone will think Beaver is a liar.

Wally has grudging seen that Ward is right, he has to take the Beaver. When Ward signs the paper and hands it to Beaver, Beaver says the picnic is called off. Miss Landers calls and says Mr. Dennison has offered to take the Beaver. Upstairs Wally is filling Beaver's head with horrible scenarios that could take place if they decide to make an example of Beaver at school for lying about his dad's non trip. Including wearing his sneakers around his neck.

When Ward has to talk to the Beaver about the lie, Beaver uses cuteness and naiveté to the full to make Ward feel guilty. Ward figures he will be able to work it out with Miss Landers.

Ward and the Beaver get home and they won a genuine plastic cup that Beaver will keep in his room. Wally seems OK with the way everything turned out. I'm sure Ward was a lot happier dodging a fishing trip with Eddie Haskell. No doubt he will insist the next trip fishing with Wally be family only.

Promises You Can't Always Keep
ccthemovieman-129 November 2006
Ward promises Wally to take him fishing Saturday. Wally is skeptical because his dad has canceled three weeks in a row, but he's assured that won't happen again (yeah, right).

Meanwhile, Beaver is in class and we see his new teacher, Miss Landers, played by Sue Randall, another pretty and wholesome-looking lady like last year's teacher "Miss Canfield" (Diane Brewster). The two women looked similar. Miss Landers announces the father-child picnic will be Saturday and has everyone has to bring home a permission slip from their father. Ward says okay to that but has difficulty telling Wally he's going to back out again. Ward has a predicament.

The boys do, too, as they find out their dad has promised them both to be with them on Saturday. Beaver makes things worse. Thinking his dad is going to take Wally instead of him, he makes up a lie about his dad going to Washington and unable to make the picnic.

In all, a "fair" episode.

Ward Promises
StrictlyConfidential18 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
(*June Cleaver quote*) - "Women aren't allowed to go unless they're a father."

Ward promises each of his sons to do something with them on the same Saturday. He realizes too late that he can't do both things on the same day.

Finally he decides to take Beaver to the school picnic at Crystals Falls.

Wally isn't too pleased with his decision.
