Interesting comparison

Just saw this on the excellent Talking Pictures channel (UK, old films and TV). I'd seen the originals in the 60s too.

THIS story was also an episode in the Rowan Atkinson series, an inferior Maigret - but better production values (as expected in the 2010s!) and clearly a bigger budget.

The other review on here, by Prismark, saw the same thing as me, but doesn't allow for the running time being just an hour in this old series, this being a complex story for that timing. It also mention Solon getting hurt, well, he WAS -- he actually did the stunt himself, had probably said he'd be fine -- but he could have been acting of course!

This series makes a lot of Magistrate Comeliau, even mentioning the differences with British procedure. The TV makes Comeliau a bit of a comedy aspect, not really how he is portrayed in the books.

The reference to "dark, violent" also takes no account of what executives would put on TV back then -- it WAS the 60s?!!! The shootout was little different to those seen on many TV shows back then, but the overall episode was good -- maybe other viewers noticed that the bar interior was exactly the same set as that in the canal body episode, a few weeks ago?!! Though the budget for this series 2 was clearly a bit higher (far more exterior shots), it certainly wasn't unlimited!!

Warning: Spoilers
Based on he novel Maigret's Dead Man.

A man phones Maigret telling him that he is being pursued by some men and is killed. His body is later dumped.

The deceased is later identified as a cafe owner. Lucas pretends to be the new cafe owner to draw out the murderer.

A suspicious man walks into the cafe and is shot dead in front of Maigret.

The identity of the second dead man leads Maigret to the immigrant community. Especially a band of Czechs who had committed a heinous crime.

Maigret is envious of the British police in this story as he is hounded by the magistrate who seems to just get in the way.

Unfortunately the story is ponderously realised on the screen. A shootout is staged in such a laughably inept manner.

There was no concern for actor Ewen Solon's safety who had to jump from a high wall and injured his ankle.

Yet this is a dark violent story where a rural family were brutally murdered. It should had been adapted better.
