Warning: Spoilers
Episode 38 is another filler episode centred around conversations about secondary topics. The character of Matthew, the handyman, once more reappears to warn Victoria about exploring certain parts of Collinwood, not least the basement. Meanwhile, Carolyn continues to flirt with Burke and The Count of Monte Cristo is discussed, which is obviously relevant to Burke's storyline.

Warning: Spoilers
No, unlike the recast of Sam Evans, there is no announcement, and yet for Thayer David, it's a dramatic, tension filled confrontation between him and Victoria, yet even with its forbodding nature, not violent in the way it had been insinuated by George Mitchell who originated the part. Victoria's in the basement, hoping to get more info on the sobbing woman. Matthew mentions the late Josette Collins and then clams up. Later, Matthew reluctantly agrees to take mechanical blame for Roger's accident, and blabs about Victoria being in the basement. Elizabeth claims that the sounds are winds coming through the pipes, but it's obvious that she knows exactly what it is.

A moderately enjoyable episode with the scenes between Elizabeth, Victoria and Matthew, this also features Carolyn and Burke having lunch, discussing really a bunch of nothing, only there for the two of them to have a continued connection. Burke tries to remain charming but mysterious, and that's really the only point, as well as his crack about her wanting to spend time with the family enemy. Collins family history is at the forefront of the continuing mystery, but outside the generic conflict, no real secrets are revealed, only insinuated. The final scene between Matthew and Burke adds potential tension, but it's underplayed in their scene.

In the gray light of morning, Vicki (Alexandra Moltke) goes back to the basement of Collinwood, but the crying from last evening has ended. She encounters burly Thayer David (as Matthew Morgan), in his first of several distinctive "Dark Shadows" characterizations. This meeting is similar to the episode that introduced the departed George Mitchell in the caretaker role. Unlike his predecessor, Mr. David would become an invaluable member of the cast. Matthew thinks the sobbing could be the ghost of Josette Collins, but Liz attributes it to Collinwood creaking in the wind...

Loyal to Liz, Matthew advises Vicki to stay out of the basement. At the hotel restaurant, Carolyn (Nancy Barrett) finds Burke (Mitchell Ryan) reading Alexandre Dumas' revenge story "The Count of Monte Cristo" and they are served coffee by quiet Colleen Kelly (as Susie). Carolyn tries to arrange a date with Burke. Liz (Joan Bennett) finds more "Rover Boys" books for David and orders Vicki to stay out of the basement. Carolyn reveals she has also heard the ghostly sobbing. While Vicki tutors David, Liz tries to get in touch with Ned Calder. In town, Matthew threatens Burke...
