A great debut for Mrs. Johnson.

Warning: Spoilers
Chances are that if you have watched the soaps in the last 40 years of the 20th Century, you either saw character actress Clarice Blackburn on screen or heard her writing. She acted on at least 8 daytime dramas and was a stage trained actress who played a variety of parts. Here, in her debut, she emulates Margaret Hamilton in her no nonsense, plain spoken performance, looking like the strict schoolteacher, forbodding housekeeper or town gossip. And boy is she good in stating her suspicion that the Collinwood Mansion is filled with evil, a forecast into the future that includes her.

Sheriff Patterson is searching for alibis for the principal suspects, and here he focuses on Sam Evans. Will daughter Maggie be able to prove his? Carolyn confronts Burke over her family's claims that he is lying, and is instantly drawn in by his charm...or is it his manipulation? Most episodes of "Dark Shadows" are 99% dialog and very little action, like mini-stage plays with a repetoire company, and the actors from the New York theater aide the show in rising above its mediocrities and short comings. Perhaps half an hour episodes daily back in the mid 1960's could be tedious, but on video, the show flows tightly through mini marathons. The tense emotions and character driven plots over time just get better, and this is one of those transitional episodes.

"Speak of The Devil"

At the hotel restaurant, Maggie (Kathryn Leigh Scott) is filling and polishing sugar containers when Carolyn (Nancy Barrett) comes in looking for Burke. They are both upset with Burke's accusations against Sam and Roger. Later, Burke (Mitchell Ryan) explains his side of the story to Carolyn. Sam (David Ford) tells a suspicious Maggie the unopened "life insurance" letter has nothing to do with Burke or the accident; it certainly seems, at this point, that Maggie should open the letter immediately. The script hints at her willingness's to perjure herself for her father, and Maggie does not believe Sam's description of what is written in the letter...

This episode's highlight is the first appearance of Clarice Blackburn (as Sarah Johnson). Previously mentioned as Bill Malloy's housekeeper, she gives her statement to Sheriff Patterson. Mrs. Johnson clearly smells something rotten in Collinsport, exclaiming, "Who killed Mr. Malloy!" Setting the standard for "Dark Shadows" character actresses, Ms. Blackburn performs exceptionally. Note how well she and Mr. Elcar cover for the fact that nobody filled the water cup container (from rehearsal). "I'm out of cups for the water," Elcar cues her, and they move on...

This is also reportedly the first episode where Mr. Ryan failed to show up for work; consequently it was taped only a couple of days before airing. Ryan had had frequent trouble with lines, and did not appear able to cover or recover like others in the cast. Otherwise a fine actor, Ryan later revealed a drinking problem was having an adverse effect on his performance...

Fast-paced and familiar

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 67 is another Burke-focused one that sees his character protesting his innocence to all who'll listen, while at the same time proclaiming Roger's supposed guilt. It's a well-paced episode even if it doesn't add much new to the show's mythos, other than a couple of new and reappearing supporting characters.
